Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been synthesized by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) and thermal CVD methods, and then, their properties were investigated. Carbon nanotubes were grown on Ni-coated Si substrates by MPECVD with a mixture of CH_4 and H_2 at temperatures ranging from 520˚C to 700˚C. Ni thin films had been deposited by RF magnetron sputtering before the growth of nanotubes. The density and the length of the carbon nanotubes increased with increasing growth temperature. The carbon nanotubes were curly at a growth temperature of 520 ˚C, whereas the nanotubes were straight and self-aligned upward at temperatures above 600 ˚C. Images from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed the multiwalled structures of the nanotubes with Ni caps. The grain size of Ni thin films varied with the RF power density during the sputtering process. It was found that the diameter, length, density, and number of graphitized walls of carbon nanotubes could be controlled systematically by the grain size of Ni thin films. With decreasing the grain size of Ni thin films, the diameter and number of graphitized walls of the nanotubes decreased, whereas the length and density increased. These experimental observations could be explained by cap growth mechanism proposed in this thesis. Using an array of Ni film dots prepared by employing a shadow mask, patterned carbon nanotubes that are aligned perpendicular to the substrates were observed. Carbon nanotubes have also been grown by thermal CVD at various growth temperatures (650, 700, and 750 ˚C) using C_2H_2 as the source gas. It is generally known that higher growth temperature results in better quality of carbon nanotubes. However, in this study, the carbon nanotubes grown at 650 ˚C has the best quality, i.e., the 650˚C-grown nanotubes have more uniform shapes, higher density, and longer length than the nanotubes grown at other temperatures do. It was found that this unusual phenomenon was closely related to the surface morphology of Ni thin films. During the increasing temperature to the desired value for the nanotube-growth, the surface morphology including grain size and roughness changes. When the nanotubes were grown at temperatures above 700 ˚C, the grain size of Ni films had been increased excessively in the course of increasing temperature, which resulted in poor quality of nanotubes. The variation of surface morphology of Ni thin film during the increasing temperature was demonstrated by atomic force microscopy. The mechanism for the vertical alignment of carbon nanotubes was proposed. The measurements of field emission properties revealed that the carbon nanotube tips emitted high current density at low macroscopic electric field. The Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) plot clearly showed two characteristic regions where the current saturates at the high electric field region. It was found that the saturation behavior was caused by the adsorbates-enhanced field emission mechanism. Using ZnS:Cu,Al phosphor, very bright and uniform emission patterns were obtained. The effect of different gas exposure on the saturation behavior will be further demonstrated. The electronic band structures of the vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes grown by MPECVD were investigated using angle resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations. Large band dispersions (with maximum ~2 eV) of the one-dimensional subbands were observed along the tube axis at ~ -5, -10, -17, and -20 eV, while no significant band dispersion perpendicular to the tube axis was observed. Although the chirality of the multiwalled nanotubes are likely to be mixed, the existence of the finite density of states at the Fermi level, the large 1D subband dispersion, highly degenerate states, and a small momentum periodicity with a lattice constant of 6.3 Å in the band dispersion strongly suggest that the observed nanotubes are mostly metallic with a chirality of (4k,k), where k is an integer, as predicted from the density functional calculations.
