In rubber toughened plastics, the particle size and the distribution of dispersed rubber particles within a continuous phase of glassy polymer are important to obtain optimal physical properties. Since the rate of the particle size increase is proportional to the square root of the polymerization rate, lengthening the reaction time is economically unfavorable. This fact requires the post-treatment step, chemical or physical, of synthesized rubber dispersions with relatively small particle sizes. Since the post-treatment, however, needs the reduction of the colloidal stability, the control of the aggregation rate is extremely important. Most chemical methods, reported up to this time, produce large amount of coagulum due to the lack of effective termination methods. In order to increase the particle size without the formation of coagulum, we utilized electrochemical methods, in which the ionic strength and the solution pH can be controlled by adjusting the potential applied between two electrodes. We examined various combinations of electrodes among bare electrodes and electroactive polymer coated electrodes. We also investigated the effects of solid contents of the latex, electrode potentials, and currents in the aggregation mechanism. Polybutadiene latex(PBL), which average particle size is ca. 1000A˚ with Gaussian distribution, was utilized as an ggregation medium.(Using PBL produced by the LG Chem. co.). In the case of polystyrene(PS), polymer dispersions were prepared by a conventional emulsion polymerization methods, with or without emulsifiers, have various particle size and surface charge densities. We has investigated the effects of various added salts to control PBL activation energy for the particle aggregation and makes it possible to perform the electrochemical aggregation at the low current density. On the other hand, electrochemical aggregation revealed that PS is inert to the potential at an ambient temperature unlike low Tg polymer. This problem was solved by increasing reaction temperature over 80℃. Surface charge and potential effects on the particle size increase were also investigated. The particle size increase was examined by comparing turbidity variation using Visible spectrophotometer and confirmed by submicron particle sizer (particle sizing systems "Autodilute Model 370")
