Art that shows the expression of human's inner emotions may be regarded as a part of Expression in a broad sense. Art containing the sense of expression has existed till now and will exist for all ages and countries. We can find the examples of the arts with forms of intense expression in the wall paintings of the Old Stone Age, human expression in the Hellenism Art, Gothic in the Middle Ages, Mannerism and Romantic Art which show intense expression of feelings and modified forms. The sculptures of Negros, Indians and Aztec in Mexico may also belong to Expressionism, showing intense expression. According to Joseph Emil Mu"ller, the author of Expressionism Art History Dictionary, Expressionism is an outstanding appearance particularly in the modern art, though, it already started in the primitive times and has lasted till the present. Jean Leymarie, and art historian, said that Expressionism is not a specific art tendency but an emotion of life that appears in the social crisis or in the condition of high mental instability. However, the Expressionism, as we now know, is an art movement developed in Europe, mainly in Germany, around the World War I in the early 20th century, and it's an art movement representing the contemporary and mental sense of value of young German artists rather than a sect of art. It's an art movement which appeared in the form of expression of human's inner world, that is, it shows the subjective expressions of personal ego and spirit with excluding the objective expression of the object. It was deeply characterized by the Germanic race in northern Europe and finally came to represent German art in the 20th century. Expressionistic art, characterized by Anti-nationalism, rejecting the exterior description of nature is an art valuing the inner world of the artist as a reaction upon Academism and Impressionism. Germany in those days was in confusion due to the oppressive bluster of system in the days of the Emperor Wilhelm, indolence and hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie and looseness of the elite group of the army. Some intellectuals and artists regarded the ill effect caused by citification and materialism as anti-German things and thus believed they had to bring the essence of German life through mental revolution. Their belief brought forth German Expressionism that was the fear of the decline of civilization and the hope for the revival. Expressionism was not invented by German, however, they contributed to its overall development and their expressionism is characterized by the factors of social criticism, which put value on substance rather than on form, centering on human being. Expressionism was already previewed in the symbolism of Vincent Van Gogh and Gauguin around the end of the 19th century and such artists as Ensor who expressed human's inner world in reality with masks, Munk the main theme of whose works was life and death, Schiele, Kokoschka and so on are considered as the frontiers of Expressionism. German expressionism is classified into two movements in large. One is Die Bru"ke which was formed by Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Friz Bleyl centering with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Dresden, 1905, and later Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde, Auto Mu"ller joined in it. The other is Der Blaue Reiter that was derived from New Artist Union and appered in 1911. Kandinsky, Mark, Jawlensky were the highly important members of Der Blaue Reiter. The movement of Die Bru"ke is "Psychological Expressionism" while that of Der blaue Reiter is "Formative Expressionism". Der Blaue Reiter aimed at formative harmony and mystical world that is poetic and sometimes leads to fantasy. They closely associated with people of Die Bru"ke, though, the expressionistic factors in their works had become weaker since 1913. Later, their movement was connected with Abstract art by Kandinsky and became another wide field of art succeeded by Bauhaus which appeared as the center of new Formative Movement. As for western art after Impressionism, Humanism has disappeared gradually, even till the whole 20th century. Despite such a trend, Die Bru"ke of Expressionism has maintained the traditional humanism, representing human beings and having priority to human emotions. According to their point of view, artistic creation should be based on emotions and put much more value on the expression of artist's own feelings rather than on objective expression of things, which leads to the tendency that tries to understand reality of creative source emotionally and mentally with connection to both form and matter of the arts. The history of Die Bru"ke is classified into two periods: the period of Dresden (1905∼1911) and that of Berlin (1911∼1933). In the period of Dresden, those who were led by Kirchner worked and lived together in the joint workroom with the same viewpoint on art and the main theme of that period was the moderns' longing for a primordial ideal land and expression of human mentality in the modern society. They made people yearn for natural life prior to civilization, and they had considerable effect on the artists and works of Die Bru"ke. During the period of Berlin when the decisive development was accomplished, the main theme was the aspect of city life, the problem of neglecting human beings and the pursuit of religion and new spiritual values. During that period, artists of Die Bru"ke advanced toward the more personal and independent style. Especially they made German art animated again by creating peculiar formative principles with a creative emotion and a native current. Kirchner and Nolde may be regarded as the representative artists of Die Bru"ke who represented human figure. Kirchner was the lead of establishment of Die Bru"ke and he was the most representative Expressionist along with Nolde. Such a German Expressionism was stopped by the war for a while and later appeared again in the various forms such as November Group and Neue Sachlichkeit, with the critical factors of which increased after the war and advanced toward the realistic tendency. November Group and Neue Sachlichkeit are characterized by realism, trying to approach the object in itself and understand its objective reality completely, while Expressionism tried to create works based on subjectivity and fantasy. As for the German Expressionism after the war, political and society critical character grew stronger and followed the formative technique of Expressionistic Art. However, when it comes to its character, it has proceeded to critical realism and today it shows the tendency of Expressionism such as New Expressionism. Shortly speaking, the commonness among the various tendencies of Expressionism over many fields is the attitude of rejection of the existing society and arts. New Expressionism was emerged from the even current of art which has dominated over the World Painting Circle for decades with attracting world-wide attention and it can be regarded as the continuance of the 20th German Expressionism. Die Bru"ke, the representative group of German Expressionism which had such an effect, left the fittest and purest form to the Expressionistic concept and most of all it was the painting movement for humanism. The current of Expressionism is being developed constantly even now and as Leymarie's definition mentioned earlier, Expressionism is not a specific tendency but the emotion of life that appears in the social crisis or in the condition of high mental instability. Accordingly, Expressionistic factors will appear constantly.
