본 연구에서 정리한 대바늘돌말류는 Patrick and Reimer (1966) 및 Simonsen (1979)의 분류체계를 따라 12종, 17변종, 1변품종, 2미동정종으로 Synedra acus, S. cyclopum, S. delicatissima, S. delicatissima var. angustissima, S. goulardi, S. incisa, S. minuscula, S. parasitica var. subconstricta, S. pulchella, S. pulchella var. lacerata, S. pulchella var. lanceolata, S. rumpens, S. rumpens var. familiaris, S. rumpens var. fragilarioides, S. rumpens var. meneghiniana, S. rumpens var. scotica, S. socia, S. tabulata var. obtusa, S. tenera, S. tenuissima, S. ulna, S. ulna var. aequalis, S. ulna var. amphirhynchus, S. ulna var. contracta, S. ulna var. danica, S. ulna var. obtusa, S. ulna var. oxyrhynchus, S. ulna var. oxyrhynchus for. mediocontracta, S. ulna var. ramesi, S. ulna var. spathulifera, S. sp. 1, S. sp. 2 등 총 32종류였다.

The species of the diatom genus Synedra have been generally known to us as one of the common taxa of phytoplankton community in the aquatic systems all over the world. The Synedra species have been reported as of planktonic form or attached form, and most of them live singly or in colonies. Also this genus is quite closely related to and also frequently mixed and confused with the diatom genus Fragilaria by their morphological similarity and similarity of the colony formation. There has been considerable uncertainty and dispute over the circum- scription of the diatom genera Synedra and Fragilaria. In the classifi- cation system, the recent studies have examined this aspect to justify either the combination of the genera Fragilaria and Synedra or the retention of them as separate. The identification of these genera has traditionally relied more on the difference of colonization than the face of the diatom valve because the morphological details of Synedra species are not easily discernable under light microscope and especially the valve shape is very thin needle form. The species of the diatom genus Synedra collected in Korea have been examined by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The objectives of this study are to examine the morphological variations of the Synedra species in Korean materials, to elucidate their taxonomic identity and also to evaluate the classification system. The characters of Synedra species examined in this study were length and width of valve, ratio of valve length to width, number of striae, shape of apices, shape of pseudoraphe, shape of central area, shape of axial area, number of rimoportula, shape of girdle band, shape of areolae and shape of apical pore field. As a result of this study, 32 taxa of Synedra species were observed, belonging to 12 species, 17 varieties, 1 variety-form, and 2 unknown species and arranged according to the systems of Patrick and Reimer (1966) and Simonsen (1979): Synedra acus, S. cyclopum, S. delicatissima, S. delicatissima var. angustissima, S. goulardi, S. incisa, S. minuscula, S. parasitica var. subconstricta, S. pulchella, S. pulchella var. lacerata, S. pulchella var. lanceolata, S. rumpens, S. rumpens var. familiaris, S. rumpens var. fragilarioides, S. rumpens var. meneghiniana, S. rumpens var. scotica, S. socia, S. tabulata var. obtusa, S. tenera, S. tenuissima, S. ulna, S. ulna var. aequalis, S. ulna var. amphirhynchus, S. ulna var. contracta, S. ulna var. danica, S. ulna var. obtusa, S. ulna var. oxyrhynchus, S. ulna var. oxyrhynchus for. mediocontracta, S. ulna var. ramesi, S. ulna var. spathulifera, S. sp. 1 and S. sp. 2. Of these, seven groups of Synedroids have been observed: curved or arched valve form of S. cyclopum group(Group Ⅰ), thin needle shaped valve form of S. acus group(Group Ⅱ), well-developed valve form of S. ulna group(Grou III), swollen central area form of S. rumpens group(Group IV), distinctly punctate striae form of S. pulchella group(Group V), short rhombic valve form of S. parasitica group(Group VI) and well-developed pseudoraphe form of S. tabulata group(Group VII).
