As the modern societies become diversified and complicated, demand for the education role is getting increasingly larger, which is also true of fine art field and its education. According to the development of material civilization, the mentality is to be devastated and the problem of confused self-identity becomes inflicted upon the society. The problem of self-identity tends to be worsened in case of young people, on the transient phase from childhood into the grown-up from the viewpoint of developmental stage. The object of fine art education aims at the formation of harmonized human-being integrating intellectuality, justice and righteousness. The ultimate purpose of all-round education for growing harmonious human-being includes the realization of self-identity. Accordingly, the fine art education should contribute to the advancement of pupils, satisfying the demand of them on the basis of considering the developmental stage. Especially, the question on the self-identity is one of the important one facing the youth like "Who am I? or Where am I going?" The degree of self-identity varies according to the level of understanding the current position of oneself and of objectivity in recognizing the situation in which he or she has been put in. The program for growing self-identity should be directly related with the young people themselves. The education of self-identity should function as a means of expressing the self continuously. In the research, the self-portrait class model, as a program for the establishment of self-identity, is suggested. It intends to contribute to the growth of students by the self-portrait class that will function for the students' understanding of the position of themselves and recognizing objectively the self under the environment to which he or she belongs, beyond the purpose that focuses on the essential function of fine art that expresses the formative principle and elements in the facial expression, posture and proportion of human-being that are included in the domain of portrait. The observation-oriented class focusing on the spirituality of self-portrait, started before the expression class in order to make them recognize that the self-portrait is the space of realization of self-identity consciousness based on the psychological change of human-being, not just an expression of simple formative element and principles. After class, I provided the student with the chance to recall the thoughts to be written in the document called 'self-evaluation' on which students were supposed to express their feeling felt drawing self-portrait. As a result of self-portrait education and learning for the establishment of self-identity, those students who were once responsive negatively to the self-portrait with the burden of realistic expression of self-image, showed that it was interesting to express themselves using the liberal material and method and also participated in the activity positively. And most students responded positively, saying that self-portrait class model provided them with the chance of self-reflection. Since the aim of fine art subject education is to contribute to the developing students' creativity, sentiment and aesthetic sense, not to grow them as specialist of fine art, it should pursue the realization of self-identity, the ultimate purpose of all-round education, by providing the fine art program applicable to the developmental stage of the youth. Especially, continual care by teacher and parents is required for the establishment of self-identity in youth age on the transient phase of developmental stage.
