Up to the present, the teeth shape to be used for production of many kinds of prosthetic dentistry has been measured manually. This traditional measuring method results in complicated measuring procedures and inaccurate measuring data. To overcome such problems, in this paper, a 3D dental model scanner that automatically measure the shape of the plaster dental model is developed. This system consists of 1) a camera and a laser slit beam that are used in obtaining the 3D point data via triangulation, 2) three stepping motors that can change the scanning pose of the dental model. This paper presents a 3D position measuring algorithm that can scan the shape of the dental model automatically using a camera and the laser slit beam while the measuring pose of the model is changing. However, each components of the scanning system has its own errors that affects the accuracy of the overall system. To improve the accuracy of the scanner, the scanner should be calibrated. The calibration parameters include 1) the camera's interior parameters (focal length, center of the image, distortion ratio) and 2) the camera's exterior parameters (position and rotation of the camera) and 3) other system parameters such as the orientation of the laser slip and that of the rotation axis of the scanning pose changing mechanism. The mathematical models of a camera and the 3D position measuring algorithm, which are used in the calibration procedure, are introduced. By designing the unique calibration target and proposing the automatic target center acquisition algorithm using an image processing program, the system can be automatically calibrated. After calibration, experiments using an object whose dimensions are known are executed and the overall measuring accuracy is discussed.
