Activated carbon fibers(ACFs) have received increasing attention in recent years as adsorbent, carbon catalyst, molecular sieve, especially for environmental applications, because of their higher adsorption rate and larger capacity than granular activated carbon. In this study, activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based carbon fibers by both physical activation with steam and carbon dioxide and chemical activation with KOH. The variations in specific surface area, amount of iodine adsorption, microstructure and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process are discussed. The results of this study is as follows. In steam activation, BET surface area of about 1019m²/g was obtained after 23% yield. Otherwise, carbon dioxide activation produced ACF with 694m²/g of BET surface area after 48% yield. As a results of both activation, steam activation had higher specific surface area and lower activation yield than carbon dioxide activation because of the difference in critical molecular dimension of steam and carbon dioxide and in inhibiting effect of steam and carbon dioxide. C-H₂O and C -CO₂ reactions are severely limited by product H₂ and CO, respectively and CO is a much stronger inhibitor than CO. However, carbon dioxide activation produced, at a similar degree of activation, higher micropore volume(0.3682cc/g) and amount of iodine adsorption(1589.27mg/g) than steam activation, because the diffusion coefficient for CO₂, in micropores is much higher than that for H₂O. On the contrary, steam activation would focus in the external parts of fibers due to the difficulty of this molecule to enter into the microporosity. In chemical activation with potassium hydroxide, BET surface area of about 2545 m²/g and amount of iodine adsorption of 2048.97mg/g were obtained 35.9% yield at KOH : carbon fiber ratio of 1 : 1(wt.%) and heat treatment temperature of 800 C . BET surface area of ACFs which were chemically activated was improved several times compared to ACFs which were activated physically, especially it showed an application such as catalyst for SO_x removal due to the high nitrogen content of ACFs. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for PAN based activated carbon fibers which were prepared by physical and chemical activation were of type I in the B.D.D.T classification. It is indicated that ACFs are essential microporous adsorbents and adsorption in ACFs occurs by primary micropore volume filling theory.
