Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791) was one of the greatest musicians in the history of western music. He composed in many musical genres including opera, symphony, concerto, ensemble, sonata and mass. The present study analyses the first movement of Mozart's last Sonata K.576-D major among the nineteen of Sonata. For the propose of this study, it assists the guideline to appropriate interpretations and performances of the music Sonata K.576. In this study, the origin of piano sonata and the feature of Mozart's piano sonata have been studied. In addition, the composition background of Piano Sonata K.576, the feature of tonality, form, and the theme of its first movement have been analysed. Finally, its musical characteristics have been studied by examining the techniques of piano playing, including articulation, ornament, fingering, dynamic and pedaling. Results of present study, the first movement of Mozart's last Sonata K.576-D major, are as follows: First, the Piano Sonata K.576 by Mozart takes on a form of typical Classic allegro sonata form. The theme formed in 1-4 phrases serves an important motivation to form music by the skip of strong unison and the melody of soft trill. Frequent repeats of divided rhythm of sixteenth notes in passing-tone play a critical role to connect between exposition, development, and recapitulation. Second, it represents the tonality of a traditional Classic sonata: the first and second themes in exposition are D major and A major, respectively; the first, second and third parts a-B^(b) major, g-a-b minor and b-c-a minor, respectively; passing-tone is D major; and the first and second themes in recapitulation are D-G-D major and A-D major, respectively. Third, the feature of theme is that partial motives a, b, and c, which are connected repeatedly, make a cyclic change of tonality throughout the music. Fourth, the articulation shows the contrast of expression by crossing of legato and non-legato, and especially uses legato of long phrasing. Fifth, Baroque and Galant-style are applied for the ornament. As for fingering, one should use both changed and constant position of fingers minimally so as not to cease the smooth stream of music. In the case of dynamic, it is precisely used, but not so diverse like the period of Romanticism. For subtler expression, in particular, it is characteristic to require spiritual rather than volume dynamic. In conclusion, through the study on the Piano Sonata K.576 by Mozart, the peculiarities of late-Classic piano sonata could be found by his excellent skills and experienced counterpoint form in the work.
