Even though Korean traditional music plays an important role in Korean contemporary music society, there is not much information about acoustical study for Korean traditional musical instruments. Among various Korean traditional instruments, this thesis focused on the acoustical characteristics of San-Jo Kayakum and the environmental effect of the bottom surface. First, while playing three (1st, 6th, 12th) open strings of San-Jo Kayakum, each sound was recorded by moving the microphone on the surface of Kayakum, while keeping a distance of 10 and 30 centimeters. Then, the recorded sound was compared with each other by spectrum analyzing process. Next, the sound of two points, upper side and bottom side was recorded, with three different bottom surfaces: absorption material, a wooden floor, and Dot-Ja-Li mat (which is made of sliced bamboo.) The sound of the bottom side, with no direct sound of string vibration, has more elements of non-harmonic frequency. Generally, there is a tendency that increasing the non-harmonic frequency makes the sound opaque and dull. With different bottom surfaces, there is no audible difference in the acoustical characteristics of each. However, if the bottom surface reflects sound strongly, the difference of frequency response curve between two distant microphones decreases. It means the material of the bottom surface has an effect on the sound recording.
