The purpose of this dissertation is to find out the meaning of Franz Peter Schubert(Jan.1, 1797-Nov. 19, 1828)'s music by analyzing his Wanderer Fantasie Op. 15. Schubert was a representative Romantic composer and influenced on many composers in the nineteenth century, such as Robert Schumann(1810-1856) and Franz Liszt(1811-1886). Schubert intended to realize his musical ideal by connecting the sonata form, which was prevalent in Classic music, with the form of fantasy. In addition, he tried to express his poetic disposition and sensitivity by using the melody of his own song Wanderer as a main motive in all four movements. The main themes of Wanderer Fantasie show systematic relations with the melody of the song Wanderer, acting as important factors to connect four movements as one unified piece. Melody is not based on thematic developments in Classic style, but on rhythmic and melodic repetitions of the song Wanderer. Schubert tried to show diverse characteristics of the piece by varying the same melodic line in different ways. Though the piece is divided into four movements under different tempo indications, the piece is to be considered as a single-movement fantasy. That is mainly because rhythmic and melodic shapes of the themes in each movement are closely connected. Considering harmonic characteristics, modulation is freely done in Wanderer Fantasie. Schubert frequently used the interval of thirds to modulate from one key to another, instead of using the circle of fifths. In addition, non-harmonic tones, dominant seventh chords and diminished seventh chords are used to make the harmony more colorful. The rhythmic motive presented at the beginning of the first movement leads the whole piece. It is transformed and developed further as the piece continues. Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasie had considerable influence on fantasies and sonatas of other composers in the coming generation, among whom Liszt developed thematic transformation still further in his Sonata in b. Schubert's Wanderer Fantasie is a masterpiece which is constructed within the frame of sonata form and also shows freedom of nineteenth-century Romanticism through various colors and lyricism.
