This study is an attempt that tries to position youths as a worker. To verify this thesis, this paper analyzes what kinds of conditions make youths as workers and suggests political perspectives that secure their right of work. For this analysis, the paper first examines structural relations between youths and labor, then it scrutinizes the working experiences of youth at fast-food restaurants while interviewing them in-depth. In order to establish the existence of youth workers, first of all, questioning what is a minimum requirement of defining a worker is necessary. Within a boundary of the working people who are full-time positioned men and make their own salaries, youth workers have historically been invisible with other side-jobs in labor market. Due to this aspect, the working men who are breadwinners and have full-time job, therefore, recognized to be charged of the whole labor in society and youths always become a flexible labor depends on how much their labor market demands job opportunities. In Korean society, many youths had come into labor market as untrained labors during the industrial development of 1960s and 1970s. After 1970s, the youths were transferred to school systems since school education became publicized and the achievement of higher education which provided a better opportunity to earn more money was issued as a major importance. The youths who used to be workers during industrial development, therefore, became the people who owned their own identity of their generation. Because the post-industrial society makes the process of labor flexibility deepen, the youths are come into service industries like fast-food restaurants or gas-stations as part-time job workers. In societal discussion about youth labor, it devalues the working experiences of youth as their economical desire that fulfills their needs of consuming or views as one of their life experiences that goes prior to their professional job opportunities. This kind of societal perspective, however, does not reflect the uniqueness of the working experiences of youth regarding their selections of jobs and consistency of their works. Due to this respect, the paper analyzes the process of substantial work in order to investigate the youths who works at fast-food restaurants as a part-time basis personal understanding of their work. At fast-food restaurants, the youths experiences some unique characteristics that are as it follows: the commitment of educational training based on their companies needs, the ranking system that is based on their working period and accomplishment, the division of work regarding gender, and emotional labor followed by face-to-face service. In addition, the youths continues to work their jobs by selecting their work-time selectively although their jobs do not pay them well and demands physical work highly. Based on those characteristics, the requirements at fast-food restaurants are overall standardized and the labors are recognized as simply repetitive work followed by manual. Nevertheless, the adolescent labors not only accept this manual passively, but they also partially resist the requirement of their work by opposing or personalizing the manual. As well as this resistance, they establish their personal network among peers so that they can resolve their dissatisfactions of their working conditions. This kind of process can be recognized as the way that the adolescent workers try to provide the new meanings of the previous training. Also, they adopt business ideology and fully devote themselves at work while coming into close relation with their colleagues. Through their work, the youth workers deal with their economic independence as top priority and evaluate their peer relations that are established within companies as a positive aspect of social experiences. While establishing their working experiences and the knowledge of their careers, the adolescent workers consider a fast-food manager as their future job. They, on the other hand, reveal some uncertainty about this future possibility since they consider their part-time jobs at fast-food restaurants as limited job opportunity during their adolescent period.
