(The) effects of family and peer relationships on depression and antisocial behaviors of urban children in poverty원문보기

This study attempted to investigate how the family and peer transactions affect children's depression, aggression, and delinquency in the context of urban poverty. The subjects, 149 grade 4 and 5, and 109 grade 7 and 8, completed a questionnaire which asks their family stress, family cohesion, family involvement, peer stress, peer social support, peer involvement, and peers' value. Those three variables on family relationship and 4 variables on peer relationship respectively were entered as criteria variables in cluster analyses. The subjects were grouped into five different family clusters(detached, low hassles, supportive-involving, hassling, and dysfunctional), and into five different peer clusters(disengaging, disengaging-prosocial peer, supportive-engaging, hassling-antisocial peer, and normative). The children of dysfunctional family, characterized by combination of high stress and low cohesion, showed the highest level of depression, aggression, and delinquency. The children of hassling-antisocial peer group, which is characterized by high stress and low social support, were highest in the scores of depression, aggression, and delinquency. On the contrary, the combination of low stress and high family cohesion, as in the supportive-involving family, seems to be a protective factor for the children's adjustment. The children of disengaging peer cluster showed lower scores on the depression, aggression, and delinquency than the children of supportive-engaging peer cluster. In the context of urban poverty which is related positively with overall poor adjustment, less involvement with peers might be protective. Those results accentuate the necessity to consider multiple factors in the pattern of family and peer relationships and to consider the social context in which those factors affect the children. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
