Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, a Victorian woman's bildungsroman, is influenced by dominant ideologies of domesticity and ideal womanhood in nineteenth-century England, but also renders the author's critical attitude about social expectations in her representation of those ideologies. This study attempts to examine Bronte's contradictory or ambivalent representations of domesticity and womanhood in the novel in which she tries to protest against, and at the same time support, the dominant social ideology. The author's progressive perspective on issues of gender and class, as revealed through the realistic depiction of an orphaned middle-class governess's personal development, eventually ends up with a rather passive conclusion. This thesis aims to prove that the author's limited challenge toward social norms results from her responsibilities as an English woman whose role was a homemaker as a national mission, and eventually Charlotte Bronte could not avoid the larger frame of the social ideology. The first chapter explores Bronte's critical viewpoint about domesticity with which nineteenth-century British society was obsessed. Depicting the home in reality and the realistic women's role in Victorian society, Bronte discloses the discrepancy between the Victorian ideology of femininity, represented as "the angel in the house," and the reality of Victorian women's lives, and also attempts to collapse the border line of "separate spheres." However, the novel's narrative exposes limits that the ultimate women's role is illuminated best within the private sphere of home. The second chapter traces the close relationship between the womanhood of Jane Eyre, defined as an ideal femininity and Englishness, and discusses the author's implicit conformity to the dominant social ideology. Jane's ideal womanhood, which is constructed by education and at the same time inscribed innately within her English identity, is glorified by comparison with various women's defects including those of the colonized other, and crowned by emphasis on her Englishness. The author's pride about English pedagogy and racial superiority is connected to the nationalistic mission of English women to protect English society and its members safely, and thus impedes the author's progressiveness in gender politics. Bronte's perspective points out the contradictions in the dominant ideology and women's sphere as defined in the novel is expanded to encompass England itself. Yet, Bronte could not help admitting another instance of separate spheres between England and non-England within the context of colonial expansion as further participating in the social tendency to reinforce a domestic ideology of the woman as homemaker.
