With the re-evaluation of the movements for democratization in South Korea in the 1990s, some important political events have become symbolized as "representative spaces" in memorial projects that have been supported by the State. These activities are still being kept up and this memorial work will continue for some time in the future. The thesis seeks to explore the major movements for democratization in South Korea in terms of the concepts of the "politics of memory" and "spatial representation". This thesis concentrates on the following issues: First, what process of the memorial struggle allows these movements for democratization to become symbolized by representative spaces? Second, how have the communities for representation, which have pushed to construct the spatial representations, been formed in order to achieve their various purposes, and which group's opinions have actually fulfilled their stated goals? Third, what are the sociological meanings of the spatial structures and structural principles and elements that are presented in the representative spaces of the movements for democratization? This thesis observes the specific characters of the original events and establishes four factors that have influenced these spatial representations. Further, sociological factors were established in order to investigate issues relating to the politics of memory and spatial representation. These four factors are as follows: political factors, social-organic factors, economic factors and cultural factors. These factors have been assigned differences in importance according to the differing facets of politics of memory. The results of the thesis can be summarized as follows: First, it was political factors and social-organic factors that influenced the movements for democratization to become spatial representations. These factors included the character of the government, the strategy of securing legitimacy from the government, the level of struggle for the memorial, the directivity of the groups engaged in the memorial struggle, and the stimulation by the memorial work of other movements for democratization. Second, the process by which movements for democratization are made into spatial representations has two main methods, and four minor ones. These include: the Revolution of April 19th, propelled by State monopoly, the Kwangju Peoples' Uprising, propelled by both the private-sector and the government council, the Pusan-Masan Democracy Uprising, propelled by both the private-sector, and the Uprising of March 15th, propelled by communities councils. There have implications for the forms and goals for the existence of communities for representation. Third representative experts embody spatial representations, but the ways of representing the movements democratization have been influenced by the communities for representation. Communities for representation have the right of decision of what represents the original events, how to represent them, and how to choose the representative experts and ideas. It can be seen that both insistence and the opinion of the group has a superior strength that exists in the communities for representation. Fourth, the representative spaces chosen are similar in outward appearance and structure, regardless of the specific characters of the communities for representation. This is especially apparent in the composing of cemeteries, representative spaces of historical death. Despite the fact that diverse memorial spaces exist in South Korea, it is the National Memorial Board that is the most often used model for the memorial spaces. There are relationships among imitation, competition and reflective objects in the representative spaces of the movements for democratization. The prototype of imitation is the National 4·19 Memorial Cemetery. A competitive relation is apparent when observing the National 4·19 Memorial Cemetery. A competitive relation is apparent when observing the National 4·19 Memorial Cemetery and the 5·18 Cemetery. The most obvious reflective objects are the representative spaces for the Kwangju Peoples' Uprising. Fifth, in general, the outward appearances of the representative spaces face criticism that their spatial arrangements are hierarchical, vertical or symmetrically spatial structures because they are composed of various constructions which have ambiguous histories and make use of open spaces for the memorial. This phenomenon is only a major issue when it comes to whether or not to compose a representative spaces, and this means that it does not involve an interest in how to represent a property of democracy and resistance while making use of these spaces. The above-mentioned representative spaces for the movements for democratization in South Korea have showed that, on one hand, they have been affected by the resistance of the struggle to construct these memorials, while on the other hand, they have affected the way that authoritative and military governments have pursued the process of the construction of these spaces. This means that the memorial struggles for the movements for democratization can be categorized as a reflective object. In other words, the effort for more progress towards democratization overcame the institutionalized frameworks, the customary commemorations of past events, and sublimated the essential implications included in the historical events. Therefore, it is posited that representative spaces for the movements for democratization will, in the 21st century, be made of living reflective spaces, illustrating a critical interchange among the past, present, and the future.
