This paper aims to comprehensively examine the screen memories comprised of contemporary Korean films by analyzing the 21st century Korean cinema from the perspectives of the politics of memory and the digital turn in cinema. The issue of memories and the post-cinematic shift have been separately addressed and researched in the study of Korean films, but they have not been analyzed in relation to each other. By taking both of these perspectives into consideration, this paper intends to capture the dynamic scene of the 21st century Korean cinema, in which cultural memories are generated. This paper identifies the 2000s and 2010s as a transitional period for Korean cinema, in which Korean cinema’s means of existence is reconstructed in the post-cinema era through the conflicts and contentions of the ambivalent and contradictory desires surrounding Korean history and the cinematic. In the 2000s, Korean society finally entered an era where it became possible to speak of traumatic history, but ironically the world was transitioning to the era of post-history where history is dismantled. In the 21st century, the gaze of Korean cinema turned to the past with anxiety about the perishing history as well as the newly gained freedom to address history in cinematic form. At this point, a characteristic feature of the Korean cinema's gaze toward the past is its interest in the traumatic past. From this perspective, this paper defines the 21st-century Korean cinema as “trauma cinema” and aims to prove the following two propositions. First, paradoxically captivated by the fascination with memories at a time when history began to perish, Korean cinema appears as divisive texts that are conflicted and contending between the demand for remembrance and the desire for oblivion, and it is symptomatic of Korean cinema’s traumatic conditions. These symptoms are of historical traumas addressed by Korean films, which are also the traumas that are still in progress, and more importantly, the traumas of post-cinema that fail to represent history. Second, in addressing the traumas of Korean history, these films divulge self-reflexivity of the media by marking the “crisis of historical awareness” along with the “crisis of representation” or “crisis of referentiality” caused by the digital turn in the cinema. After the dismantling of the films’ indexicality to reality, films are craving the images of reality more intensely than ever before. The fascination with memory is activated in concert with the fascination with archival images, indices, and documentary images of the past. This shows that, in the new millennium, Korean cinema has not only begun to rewrite history, but also been attempting to re-establish the ontology of cinema itself as a medium for communicating history. Analyzing Korean cinema in the 21st century with through the lens of the two crisscrossing perspectives requires a critical approach to the ways in which Korean cinema constructs memories, since films not only reflect the contemporary methods of remembrance, but are also “productive apparatus” that shape collective and cultural memories. In other words, the trauma cinema of the 21st century Korean cinema does not simply reflect trauma, but is itself a cultural arena where traumatic experiences/memories/history are recognized, negotiated, and reshaped today. Therefore, by critically examining the screen memory of Korean films, this paper ascertains the possibilities and limitations of the representation of memories that are made up of contemporary Korean films, and also provides a foundation for the films of memories to come.
