Difference in Internal Working Model Between Mothers with Children with Attachment Disturbance/Disorder and Mothers with Non-clinical Children : by means of AAI원문보기

The purpose of this study was to examine what type of experience mothers shared with their parents during their childhood and to compare it between mothers whose children suffered from attachment disturbance/ disorder and mothers with non-clinical children. The subjects in this study were 60 mothers, among which 30 had children who were diagnosed with attachment disturbance/disorder. The other mothers whose children didn't have such a problem were all selected as a comparison group. The instrument used to measure the represented experience of the mothers was Adult Attachment Interview(AAI), and every interview was recorded in detail. The findings of this study could be described as below: 1. The mothers whose children had attachment disturbance/disorder had undergone significantly more negative life events in their childhood than the others with non-clinical children. In the latter group, the death of fathers and divorce were more common, and the clinical group was more exposed to the death of mothers, parental divorce, family member's psychiatric disorder, physical abuse and sexual abuse. But the discreponcy between the two groups wasn't statistically significant. There was an only significant difference in family disease, which was more experienced by the former group. This fact indicated that a combination of multiple events, rather than any single one, had a bigger impact on them. 2. The mothers with non-clinical children used more adjectives to describe their relationship with their parents, compared to the other group, though the gap between the two was statistically insignificant. And the former group utilized more positive adjectives about their parents. The clinical group presented more positive adjectives about their fathers and more negative ones about their mothers. 3. Both groups felt they were closer to their mothers. Among the mothers with non-clinical children, the strongest supporter was (maternal) grandparents, followed by siblings, intimate relatives, teachers, and neighbors. In clinical group event of the others, the best supporter was (maternal) grandparents, followed by intimate relatives and teachers. And the latter group had been more discriminated by their parents against their siblings. The latter group also reported significantly more incidents that had entailed external wounds, and the intensity of injury and shock was stronger. And that group had more experience to have been severely scared or threatened by their parents. 4. The two groups were significantly different in their childhood experience associated with parental affection, rejection and neglect. The mothers with non-clinical children had been more loved by their fathers and mothers, and had been less rejected or neglected by them.
