(A) Study on the Effect of Peer-Initiated Sociability Intervention Strategy on the Social Interaction of Integrated Disabled Young Children원문보기

A social interaction with peers is mandatory for the growth of young children, and acquiring interaction skills that empower preschoolers to learn other skills are one of the crucial developmental tasks to be achieved. But many disabled young children have a tendency not to be involved in social interaction with their peers, and some intervention effort to facilitate it is called for. The purpose of this study was to provide physically challenged preschoolers with an intervention focusing on nondisabled peer-initiated social starting behavior training in a bid to determine the effect of this type of intervention on the social interaction of disabled young children and promote appropriate social interaction between disabled and nondisabled peers. The subjects in this study were three physically different young children integrated into regular kindergarten and three nondisabled peer children from the same class. The disabled children who were at the chronological age of 6 or 7 underwent training in social starting behavior before the experiment. The multiple base-line design was employed for the training of the peer young children. After the training was completed, an attempt to facilitate the verbal skills of the peer children was implemented in a play session to accelerate their social starting behavior. And then the frequency of social interaction and social starting behavior by the physically challenged children and that of social starting behavior by the peers were measured, 2nd whether or not the intervention effect lasted after the experiment was investigated. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the peer-initiated social starting behavior training and verbal facilitation served to elevate the social interaction between the disabled and non disabled preschoolers. Second, the peer-initiated social starting behavior training and verbal facilitation had an effect on furthering the peer children's social starting behavior toward the disabled group. Third, the physically challenged child 2 and 3 showed increase in social starting behavior, but the disabled child 1 more responded to the starting behavior by the peer children. Fourth, social interaction between the two groups continued to exist one month after the experiment was finished. That was more frequent in the retention period than in the base-line one, but less than in the intervention period. The above-mentioned findings suggested that the peer-initiated social starting behavior training and verbal facilitation had an effect on stepping up the social starting behavior by the peer children and social interaction between the disabled and peer groups. The social interaction between the groups took place very rarely in the base-line period, and that occurred less in the retention period than in the intervention sessions, but more often than in the base-line period. In conclusion, it's important to train peer preschoolers to stimulate the social interaction of physically different young children in regular kindergarten. And a peer-initiated sociability intervention strategy exercises a positive influence on enhancing social interaction between disabled and nondisabled preschoolers both in quality and quantity, when disabled children are exposed to it to accelerate interaction with peers in an integrated environment. But how the improved social interaction of physically challenged preschoolers could be applied to other people or remain unchanged in a different environment or situation should carefully be studied.
