Currently, there are a total of about 4 million tons of waste gypsum produced by domestic industries . Among these, about 20 million tons remain to be unused, causing serious problems with environmental contamination which must be appropriately treated. Meanwhile, about 10 million tons of low grade vermiculite reserves are estimated in the domestic fields, part of which are used only for agricultural purposes at present. This lead us to study for enhancement of its potentiality and development of new utility. Furthermore, in accident with firing, burning of current fireproof materials used for building causes to produce noxious gas, so that it often happens to occur many deaths by suffocation. Therefore, study on the proper utility of waste gypsum and vermiculite in the development of fireproof material, has been made to obtain basic informations necessary for solving such problems. In this study, firstly the crystal and ingredients of waste gypsum as well as the domestic vermiculite have been analysed. It is followed by experimental study on heat absorption of those fireproof materials to prevent the fire from widespreading at high temperature. Also, as a mixture to fireproof material, the feasibility of cement has been studied, together with the expanded vermiculite for a mixture in order to resist on heat impact and to enhance fireproof and absorption effect. Results of study are summarized as follows. The crystal of natural CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O are confirmed to have radial shape. Through the heat analysis, it is found that two phases of endthermic reaction, that is, 472.94J/g between 121 and 163℃, and 136.75J/g between 153 and 201% occur. Waste gypsum from the desulfurizing system can be converted into CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O, the crystal of which forms needle-shaped and even smaller than the natural gypsum. It has also been confirmed by the heat analysis using the differential scanning calorimetry that CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O shows an endothermic reaction with 490.43J/g between 105℃ and 130℃. Meanwhile, waste gypsum produced in the factory of fertilizers, contains 8% of phosphate as a by-product, or CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O converted from the gypsum contains much smaller and coronal-shaped crystals than the natural gypsum. In the differential scanning calorimetry, it is found that CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O shows endothermic reaction with 227.47J/g between 137℃ and 153℃ and with 58.30J/g between 153℃ and 203℃. It is also found by the analysis with the differential scanning calorimetry that cement shows a low endothermic reaction between 30 and 320℃. The hardened specimen which is the mixture of gypsum waste and cement at the ratio of 1 to 1 is also analyzed using the differential scanning calorimeter to find that endothermic reaction peaks of waste CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O and hydrated cement coexist. Cement and waste gypsum samples mixed in a certain ratio and hydrated, has been undergone with fireproof testing at the temperature of 1,000℃. As a result, it is confirmed that with 10% of waste gypsum in the mixture, the weight of the latter is reduced to its least by 23%. With the 60% of waste gypsum occupied in the mixture, the latter is reduced to its maximum by 28% in weight. In case that waste gypsum exceeds 60% in the content of the mixture, the weight reduction rate of the mixture starts to increase again. In the fireproof test here, all the mixtures of cement and waste gypsum have been more likely to be cracked because they are rather sensitive to heat shock or high temperature. The domestic vermiculite ore contains both vermiculite and mica, and is lower in MgO content than foreign ones(from China and South Africa), but higher in Fe_(2)O_(3) content. The expanded vermiculite is light with the apparent density of 0.1 to 0.7 and incombustible, and is stable fireproof material with the thermal conductivity of 0.03 to 0.15kcal/mh℃. It is also environmentally suitable with the sound absorption rate of 72% at 2000Hz. The mixture of cement and gypsum would be likely to be cracked under heat shock or fireproof test. The addition of expanded vermiculite ensures no such crack, to heat shock and fireproof tests even at 1000℃. The higher the content rate of expanded vermiculite, the better the effect of sound absorption or fireproofing is. But the time of fire resistance decreases exponentially. The time tends to increase linearly to the thickness of specimens. Thus the researcher could find the feasibility of developing interior fireproof materials having effects of sound absorption and insulation with domestic expanded vermiculite, gypsum and cement mixture.
