The hardness of running shoes affects to the impact absorbtion and rearfoot movement during running and walking. In prior researches which related to the shoes hardness, these are focused on measuring rearfoot movement or finding better hardness for absorbing impact forces. The lower hardness is better for impact shock absorbing, but worse for rearfoot movement. So, it is needed to find a suitable condition which satisfies both problems simultaneously. And the purpose of this thesis is same as the above. For the experiment, 12 healthy undergraduate and graduate students are voluntarily participated as subjects. And the subjects walked or runned on treadmill with 4 different speeds and 6 different designed hardness of shoes. High speed camera was employed to take pictures of rearfoot movement and analysed angles of Achilles tendon. And impact forces were measured from shank, knee, head teeth. The results are as follows ; (1) The initial Achilles tendon angle(β_(0)) is smaller when the lateral rearfoot hardness is smaller than that of medial rearfoot(As like as sample shoes #3 and #4) (2) The 10% initial pronation angle(β_(10%)) is most dangerous to cause injury. If we consider Achilles tendon angle and hardness simultaneously, sample shoes #6 is most desirable to reduce injury. (3) Impact forces is great as to speed increases, and the order is shank, knee and head teeth, respectively. The magnitude of the impact forces on shank and knee is similar to each other, and most of that is diminished on the way to head teeth. (4) The acceleration is smaller when the lateral hardness is smaller than medial. (5) Shock transmissibility ratio between shank and knee is about 8~10 %, and 70~80 % between shank and head teeth. The results of this thesis will be helpful to develope a good running shoes.
