The teaching and learning of vocabulary has never aroused the same degree of interest within language teaching as grammar, reading or writing. But languages are full of strong collocational pairs and, therefore, collocation deserves to be a central aspect of vocabulary study. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the nature and characteristics of collocation in English, and to analyze the student's errors concerning collocation and suggest some practical and systematic teaching methods of collocation. Collocation is a group of words which occur together repeatedly in a language. Knowledge of collocational appropriacy is part of the native speaker's competence, and can be problematic for learners in cases where collocability is language-specific and does not seem solely determined by universal semantic constraints. Collocation can be divided into two parts: grammatical collocation and lexical collocation. Grammatical collocation is a recurrent combination of a ominant word (verb, noun, adjective) followed by a 'grammatical' word, typically a preposition. Lexical collocation is a partnership of 'two "equal" lexical components'. Theoretically, it is possible for any lexical item of English to co-occur or 'keep company' with any other lexical item. However, for any particular lexical item x there are certain other items which have a high probability of being found near x. Collocation usually has a high degree of co-occurrence rate and there exist collocational "tensions" between the two lexical items. Collocational mismatches are frequent in the language production of foreign or second language learners since they never encounter a word or combination of words with sufficient frequency to demarcate its range or narrow the item down to its more fixed partnerships. Even intermediate or advanced learners often make inappropriate or unacceptable collocations. Therefore elavorate teaching-learning of collocation is needed to diminish collocational mismatches. For this purpose, I present some practical and systematic teaching methods of collocation for beginning, and intermediate-advanced course students. Exercises are devised to fill in blanks in complete sentences, to match two parts of sentences, to substitute words in a sentence, or to write sentences using given words.
