This study investigates the differences in reading-related variables and linguistic ability between good readers and poor readers, and correlations amongst reading ability, reading-related variables, and linguistic ability. Specifically, the following research questions are asked. (1) Are there any differences between groups in the performances on the tests of phonological awareness and rapid automatized naming(RAN), which are reading-related variables? (2) Do they differ in the performances on the tests that evaluate linguistic ability (e.g., manifest variables for linguistic ability, such as vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure, and linguistic inference). (3) Are there any significant correlations amongst manifest variables for reading ability and linguistic ability, and reading-related variables. For the empirical analysis, 141 subjects were selected from the second graders in an elementary school. They were tested on word recognition and reading comprehension. Top 15 and bottom 15 based on test results were classified into good and poor readers, respectively. Subsequent tests were administered to each group. To evaluate reading ability, non-sense word recognition, reading speed, reading comprehension, oral reading speed, and oral reading error were measured. To evaluate reading-related variables, phonological awareness, RAN-number, and RAN-letter were measured. To evaluate linguistic ability, receptive vocabulary test, sentence comprehension test, and problem-solving test were administered. The empirical results showed that: First, there was a significant difference between groups in the performances on the tests of phonological awareness, which is consistent with previous research findings. On the other hand, the performances on the RAN test were not significantly different between groups despite a lot of support for a discriminant power of the RAN test in many previous studies. These findings imply that two tests are meant to measure two different aspects of reading ability. Second, there was a significant differences between groups in the performances on a set of linguistic tests. It appears that linguistic ability considerably influences reading ability of the second graders. In particular, sentence comprehension test which measures semantic- syntactic knowledge turned out to be a single most powerful discriminant criterion that tells good readers from poor readers. Third, reading ability was highly correlated with the scores on all of the linguistic tests and phonological awareness. But RAN was correlated with neither reading ability nor linguistic ability. This study may be challenged on account of using non-standardized procedure and tests to discriminate between good readers and poor readers. However, it has contributed to stepping forward to the development of more reliable and standardized procedure by reexamining the factors that might affect the differences between two groups. Given that any reliable and valid procedures are currently unavailable, development of better test procedures are urgently needed. And, longitudinal studies following the long-term courses of reading ability are needed to detect any reading deficiency at an earlier stage.
