Recently, due to industrial development and urbanization, large-scale deep excavation works are being done for efficient use of the site area. When a downtown site is excavated deep, the surrounding areas and soil structures may be displaced and as a result, buildings and soil structures may be destabilized. In particular, movements of the adjacent structures may be directly affected by the extent and distribution of the rear side ground settlement caused by excavation works. Accordingly, it is deemed important to precisely assess the effects of excavation works on rear side ground settlement and adjacent structures. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at analyzing the effects of the underground water level drop on the settlement of soil wall planes and rear side ground. To this end, ground settlement, horizontal displacement and underground water level were surveyed on the spot during excavation work. In addition, the horizontal displacement measurements surveyed were used to calculate the vertical settlement values by applying the Caspe method, while the underground water level measurements were analyzed with a three-dimensional underground water flow interpretation program. Moreover, the settlement values were calculated by referring to the effective stress increments caused by the underground water level drop for each soil layer. Furthermore, a curve showing the horizontal and vertical settlement movements of surrounding ground caused by stress-deformation due to excavation works was drawn using a numeric interpretation program ((FLAC, PENTAGON), and the results thereof were analyzed to be compared with the actual ground settlement values. As a consequence, when the ground was excavated 11.8m deep, the horizontal displacement was 16.6mm, being different from the numerically interpreted value of 9.64mm. Such a difference may have been attributable to the unconformity between interpreted and actual site conditions, but it seems to be negligible. In terms of the vertical displacement caused by the final excavation, the vertical settlements were 3mm, 2mm and 1mm for each offset distance of 6m, 12m and 18m, respectively. When the same site was interpreted numerically, the maximum displacement was 3.3mm with PENTAGON 3D and FLAC 2C applied. Namely, the conventional values and those obtained from the numeric interpretation programs were similar to the actual settlement values, which means that the numerically interpreted values are reliable and the three methods are valid. Moreover, as a result of comparing the actual settlement values surveyed with the official academic ones and those obtained from the numeric interpretation programs (PENTAGON, FLAC), it was confirmed that the maximum value of vertical settlement or 3.3mm is within the allowance of the current differential settlement for major structures. (1/300 > 3.3/6000).
