(A) Study on the misconception concerning dominant and recessive character of heredity which appear in middle and high school biology원문보기

This study surveyed and analyzed the misconcepts concerning dominant and recessive character which appear in middle and high school biology textbooks, and general biology textbooks and genetics for college. Besides, the misconcepts were surveyed and analyzed, which students and teachers had. The textbooks analyzed were science for the third grade of middle school, biology II of high school, general biology and genetics. The study examined the misconcepts in describing the definition of dominance and recessive, law of dominance, incomplete dominance and codominance. There were more misconception in high school textbooks than in middle school textbooks. The misconcepts concerning the definition of dominance and recessive or concerning character expression of incomplete dominance were found out in general biology or genetics textbooks. Subjects for the survey were 103 natural science students in the third grade at K high school in Kimpo and 264 students in the third grade at K middle school. The students had lots of misconception concerning dominance and recessive. Especially, 28% of middle school students gave right answers to a question about character expression of complete dominance and 39% of high school students did. 29% of middle school students gave right answers that dominant genes control recessive genes in a question about character expression of complete dominance and 31% of high school students did. 31% of middle school students and 24% of high school students gave right answers that dominance is expressed better than recessive. 10% of middle school students and 22% of high school students gave right answers in a question about character expression of incomplete dominance. In this question, 43% of middle school students and 32% of high school students gave answers that an intermediate character appears after the products of two alleles are mixed. 23% of both middle and high school students gave answers that two alleles are mixed and the intermediate characters are expressed by these genes. The result shows that they recognized separately the concept of transmission heredity at the individual level and the process of character expression at the molecular level. For the survey of teachers' misconception, 53 teachers working in Kyounggi-do were analyzed. 60% and 51% of them gave right answers to character expression of complete and incomplete dominance, respectively. They had the misconcepts that 'dominance controls completely recessive and then it is expressed' in character expression of complete dominance. Like students, they had the misconception that 'each product of two genes is mixed and then intermediate character appears' in character expression of incomplete dominance. According to this study, such expressions as 'dominant character governs, controls, or suppresses recessive character,' shown in textbooks, which have resulted in students' misconception, should be disappeared. Lessons for high school students need to integrate transmission heredity at the individual level and the process of character expression at the molecular level.
