The purpose of this study was to examine prevailance of eating disorders in high school girls, and to find out the general and psychological factors that influence on eating disorders. The general factors included are BMI, weight satisfaction, diet, and the psychological ones are body satisfaction, self-esteem, past-, present- and future- happiness, and life satisfaction. Data were collected from 4 vocational girls' high schools and 4 general girls' high schools in Incheon. Among the total of 595 questionnaires collected, 581 were analyzed. For the data analysis, frequency, percentage, average, T-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's Post-Hoc, Pearson's correlation and regression were conducted with SPSS WIN ver 10.0 program. The summary of the study is as follows: 1. Twenty five out of 581 students(4.3%), who got more than 20 in the eating attitude test(EAT-26), turns out to have eating disorders. There were no significant differences in the score of EAT-26 among 1, 2, 3 grade and between vocational and general high school girls. 2. Overweight students rather than underweight ones, and the students who are not satisfied with their own weight rather than those who are satisfied are considered to have higher possibility of having eating disorders. There is great difference between the actual body figure and the ideal one. The mean BMI of the subjects is 20.2, and the BMI which students think of as ideal is 17.6. As result, about 60% of the students are not satisfied with their own body weight. 3. As the frequency of diet trial, taking diet pills, and skipping dinner are higher, the score of EAT-26 is higher, meaning that more likely to develop eating disorders. More than half(54.4%) of students have tried diet more than once to control body weight, and among them 57.3% answered that the results of diet were not so satisfactory. 4. The relationship between eating disorders and psychological factors is as follows: The lower the degree of body satisfaction and the self-esteem are, the higher the average score of EAT-26 is. Also the more they feel unsatisfied with their past- and present- life, and with the life such as self-, family-, friends- and social-, the higher the average score of EAT-26 is, which means they are more likely to develop eating disorders. 5. As the result of regression analysis, the degree of weight satisfaction is the most powerful predictor on the EAT-26 score followed by body satisfaction, frequency of diet, and the level of energy restriction. As the degree of weight and body satisfaction are lower, as the frequency of diet trial is higher, and as the level of energy restriction is higher, the possibility of having eating disorders is higher. Self-esteem is, however, not regarded as the important cause of developing eating disorders. It tells that eating disorders are closely related to general and psychological factors. Therefore in order to prevent teenagers' eating disorders, they should not judge one another by appearances and should take efforts to be satisfied with their own mind and bodies.
