(The) Effects of ballet education on development of children's in creativiy and formation of physical self-concept원문보기

The purpose of this research was to examine closely the formation of development in children's creativity and physical self-concept as the effects of ballet education, the objective of which was a harmonious development of a whole person through creative physical activities, in order to establish appropriate ballet education for children as a major activity in childhood education. The research was carried out on the 60 children-30 in the experimental group and 30 in the comparison group, aged between 4 to 5 attending the kindergarten attached to S University in Seoul. The experimental group children took a ballet program of 24 lessons in total-each lesson lasting for 30 minutes, two lessons a week for 12 weeks after the regular kindergarten hours. The comparison group children had free physical activities during the total of 24 lessons, each period for 30 minutes, twice a week for 12 weeks after the regular kindergarten hours. After the 12 weeks of experimental period pre and post-tests were conducted in each group and between the two groups according to sex and age differences in order to find out specific statistics through individual interviews in which the children answered the questions by responding to the terminology of physical self-concept examination. For the pre and post experiment tests, the t-test was used to measure the significant difference means of each group. The results of analysis using the Two-way Anova on the group's creativity and physical self-concept changes according to sex and age differences were as follows: First, the results of analyses showed that there was not much difference between the means in creativity and in its sub-division factors such as fluency, flexibility and originality between the experimental group and the comparison group prior to the ballet education program. But after the ballet education program, there was a significant difference (p<.01) in creativity and in the sub-division factors of creativity such as fluency (p<.01), flexibility (p<.01), originality (p<.05) in the experimental group. Second, in both groups there was no difference in creativity according to the sex but there was a difference according to the age. In creativity (p<.05) and in its sub-division factor, originality (p<.05), there was a more meaningful difference among the children aged 5 than among those of aged 4. The effects of ballet education among children were positive regardless of differences in sex. And among the male children, there was a positive effect on the intellectual side-i.e. in the development of creativity. As the children aged 5 develop fast in the creative usage of language, a ballet education program for children can be helpful in the development of creativity in the language usage. Third, as the result of analyses between the experiment group and the comparison group on physical self-concept and sub-division factors before and after the ballet education program showed no significant difference among the two groups, the effect of ballet education program was not significant in the formation of physical self-concept. Fourth, between the groups there was no significant difference in the changes of physical self-concept according to sex and age. Also there was no interaction between sex and age differences. In conclusion, as a plan of activity education today, fun and play-centered children ballet programs need to be developed as a part of curriculum to expand creativity among children during the kindergarten years, which was the peak time of development in creativity, and all the other educational institutes for children need to introduce ballet education in their curriculum and more effective plans need to be developed. In addition, three months of ballet education as the experimental period was too short a term to expect changes in the physical self-concept among the children who are in the beginning stage of building their self-concept. Therefore, for the development of physical self-concept through ballet education, there should be more extensive applications of a long-term ballet education and various research methods developed on different aspects of children's characteristics.
