The purpose of this study is to examine five Korean English dictionaries of comparable size with the aim of evaluating how successfully they satisfy Korean EFL learners' productive needs. Therefore this study explores the questions whether the Korean English dictionaries provide necessary information for Korean user's production in English, whether the information is accurate and appropriate and on what principles the information is presented. The analysis concentrates on headwords, equivalents and examples in the dictionaries since they are the centrepiece of an active bilingual dictionary. The findings of the analysis show that existing Korean-English dictionaries are less than satisfactory to assist Korean EFL learners' productive tasks. With regard to the treatment of headwords (Chapter 3), the dictionaries fail to list many basic Korean words irrespective of their boast that they include around 100,000 headwords. Besides, in choosing the forms of headwords they do not grant headwordship to forms of words of high frequency, making it difficult for the user to access these words in the dictionaries. Problems are also detected in the treatment of equivalents (Chapter 4). The Korean-English dictionaries demonstrate a strong tendency to offer multiple equivalents for a headword, which are often provided with insufficient or misleading sense discrimination. Entries which include inappropriate equivalents are also observed. In contrast, for some headwords important equivalents are not provided. Examples provided in the Korean English dictionaries (Chapter 5) also pose problems. Even though the dictionaries tend to offer multiple examples for a headword, they often fail to illustrate important collocations and idioms. In some entries the dictionaries provide too many examples which often include redundant or irrelevant phrases or sentences. Moreover, it is not rare to find awkward and incorrect translations of examples in the dictionaries. On the basis of these findings, I put forward suggestions which I hope will contribute to the compilation of a better Korean-English dictionary in the future.
