Soundings of air masses provide useful informations to understand the vertical thermal structure. Miller (1954) classified the soundings of North American tonatoes into four types which is called as Miller's composite soundings. This study investigates the soundings characteristics of air masses in Korea, based on Miller's classification, when severe storms (heavy rain or hail) occurs in Seoul·Kyonggi-Do, Cholla-Namdo, Cheju-Do from 1993 to 2002. Sounding data observed at Osan, Gwangju and Gosan station were analyzed for each study area. Heavy rainfall events defined as more than 30 mm precipitation perhour, appeared 118, 85, 70 times in Seoul · Kyonggi-Do, Cholla-Namdo, Cheju-Do, Miller's composite soundings appeared 99, 74, 62 times at Osan, Gwangju, Gosan respectively during heavy rainfall events. The appearance ratio of Miller's composite soundings is about 86%. Type I and Type Ⅱ of Miller's composite soundings appeared 124 and 100 times respectively. However, there were few of Type Ⅲ or Type Ⅳ. It is revealed that Type I is most frequently observed in Korea. We found an unique structure among Type I cases. The altitude of the inversion layer which is typical structure in Type Ⅰ, is much higher (more than 700 hPa) than Miller's Type Ⅰ. The frequency of high inversion is about 44%. We named this unique structure as "Type I -kr". Type Ⅱ is most frequently appeared at Gosan which is located west end of Cheju island. The frequency of Type Ⅱ is 51% which is higher than Type I at Gosan. However, the frequency of Type Ⅱ is less than that of total Type I at other stations. The frequency of original Type I was higher than that of Type I -kr at the Gwangju and vice versa at Osan. Seasonal variation shows high frequency of Type Ⅱ in summer. It is thought that the warm and high humidity provide good conditions for high frequency of Type Ⅱ at Gosan in summer. Miller's composite soundings appeared 52 times for hailstone events which observed 54 times during research period. The frequency is about 96%. Most soundings during hailstone event were Type Ⅳ.
