The nobleman, Kim Man-jung was born and lost his father during the Manchu war of 1636. Even if he was a member of a noble family which had the worship of the powerful, he did not blindly believe in Confucianism but magnanimously adopted Taoism and Buddhism criticizing his contemporary society. He also had been exiled because he demanded to withdraw dethronement of the queen, Inhyun in the Chosun dynasty that had too much party strives. Soepo, Kim Man-jung doesnot miss all of them and expresses them as a genre of literature, Sassinamgeonggi. The author's recognition of reality in Sassinamgeonggi is divided two: one is contradiction of a concubine system through Sassi and Kyossi. The other is material greed appearing during the late 17th century. The writercriticizes a concubine system but seems to keep a family system which is the basis of the Chosun dynasty. Not because he doesnot think that a wife and a concubine's conflict is caused by a social system of contradiction, but because he concludes that a family only keeps peace by a wife and a concubine's virtue. Also the author shows a danger of material greed spread in the late Chosun dynasty. Kyossi, Dongchung, Naengjin, and Seolmae, who pursue for material greed, face a tragic end in the long run. Their tragic end gives a danger of material greed to readers. Even though the author criticizes a society of contradictions through these recognition of reality, he seems to have a limit of a hierarchical society. Not because he as a nobleman finds out contradiction of feudalism and a concubine system, but because he points out an individual's material greed and virtue. However, Sassinamgeonggi is different from other contemporary novels, because it reflects reality of the Chosun dynasty through consisting of delicate characters' opposing systems. This great novel describing defeat of vice and triumph of virtue is cultural inheritance to have to be studied in the Korean history.
