Although there has been a lot of research done on a study to find a relationship between Korean and Chinese novel, the objects and results of the research have been criticized to be skewed towards one case. Therefore the purpose of this dissertation is to identify the similarity of Korean and Chinese novel and I would like to study the unique elements of Korean novel by comparing some translated novel with Korean classic ones. , , are examples of originally Chinese Jaejagain novel but translated into Korean and , , , are examples used as Korea classic long-novel. To start with, acknowledging the fact that Chinese Jaejagain novel and Korean novel have their own forms, I have abstracted the motif of each literature and compared then represented the results in the means of diagrams. It has been shown that both Chinese and Korean novel have some similar motif and for some examples, almost identical motif is found. However some motif exists only in Korean classic novel and even for the similar motif, the aspects differ according to its social ideology. Also in Jaejagain novel, extrasensory perception hardly exists and even when the concept is introduced in Jaejagain novel, the concept is insignificant. However extrasensory concept often appears in Korean novel especially when the main characters face difficulties. This is because in Jaejagain novel, conflicts between characters can be solved in realistic world, extrasensory perception does not have to be used. Because Chinese Jaejagain novel did not introduce extrasensory concept in the literature, a separate genre of novel that fully utilize the extrasensory concept such as and has been developed from early days in China. In Jaejagain novel, the introduction focuses on individuals while Korean novel emphasizes the importance of families. Also another difference between the two is that only child often plays a main character in Chinese Jaejagain novel but in Korean novel, especially from the 18th century many siblings appear in the literature and each plays an important role. Such a difference also exists in conclusions. In Chinese Jaejagain, Jaeja and Gain usually get married and the novel mainly describes individual's success and happiness while Korean novel talks not only individual's success but the offspring's success are often described in the conclusion. Some Korean novel even mention the offspring's success as a separate novel. Therefore from the above, it is clear that at that time, family's success and its expansion received a lot of attention. However when it comes to development of main characters' love, both Jaejagain and Korean novel show similar aspects. Male characters can be divided into two types according to the personality within the literature, love seeker and ethic seeker. Irrespective of love or ethic seekers, the common element was that male characters always achieved what they wanted, backed by strong sexism at that time. Male characters in Korean novel showed more emphasis on ethical aspects moreover Korean novel described both love and ethic seekers within the literature. Chinese Jaejagain only talked about one type of seeker in each novel. Thus Korean novel shows what an identical man should be. In Chinese Jaejagain, development of love for female characters is described in a similar way as male characters are described but Korean novel preferred passive love for female characters. For instance if female characters take the initiatives, it was not socially accepted. For women, it was not right to actively seek love nor opinion was socially respected. This shows a big difference compare to male and female characters in Chinese Jaejagain or male characters seeking both love and ethic. Similarities and differences described above, Korean novel puts more emphasis on group rather than individuals and also mainly describes stories after the marriage. This makes love an issue which is rather negatively accepted when it appears in Korean literature, this aspect becomes more apparent in 18th century. Korean novel puts more emphasis on families rather than individuals and the importance of father within a family is described. However in Chinese Jaejagain novel, which emphasizes roles of individuals rather than families, the role of a father within the family is insignificant while in Korean novel, father has a mighty role and power within the family. Its doctrine was that a family can only flourish if the father has a mighty power within the family. From the above, it is clear that even if Korean novel and Chinese Jaejagain novel had similar motif and characters thus might appear as similar, significant differences have been studied. The main difference is due to different ideology such as different emphasis between families and individuals. Korean novel seeks comfort and flourish of family by conflict between a married couples. The limitation of this paper is the limited sample size. The sample used was Jaejagain novel of China and long-novel of Korean novel and only a number of literature was included in the sample. I would like to see consistent study using more broad sample of Chinese and Korean novel to study the relationship between the two.
