Following the increase in globalization, the need to learn verbal English has drastically increased. However, Koreans are exposed to spoken English for a limited time only in a controlled classroom environment. The input these students are exposed to in a classroom is not sufficient for them to learn English in the natural way they learned Korean. Therefore, teaching methods that utilize effective inputs should be developed on the basis of precise analysis of students’ errors. This thesis analyzes how the English intonation of Korean students change as the length of sentences vary. The intonation patterns of 10 Korean 6th graders were compared with that of an American 5th grader. They were asked to read Yes-No questions and Wh-questions which differed in length. The first finding was that as the sentences got longer, the students in the study made more intonation pattern errors, which mean their intonation fell when reading Yes-No questions and their intonation rose when reading Wh-questions. They also made errors in short sentences with difficult words. Secondly, the length of the sentences affected the pitch range of both foreigner and Korean intonation at the end of sentences. The foreigners’ pitch range showed relatively modest changes for long sentences while the Koreans’ pitch range fluctuated less when the sentences were short. In conclusion, the sentence lengths of English questions affect intonation patterns for Korean students. When we consider that English sentences get longer for students as they age and move up in school, it is evident that intonation patterns should be taught deductively and clearly to facilitate the development of effective speakers of English in Korea.
