ABSTRACTChaucer''s Utopian Vision: A Political Reading of Canterbury Tales, Fragment I Kim, Jae-Cheol Dept. of English The Graduate School Yonsei University This thesis is a socio-political reading of Chaucer''s Canterbury Tales, Fragment I which consists of four tales: The Knight''s Tale, The Miller''s Tale, The Reeve''s Tale and The Cook''s Tale. Judging from Chaucer''s contemporary social structure, narrators of theses tales belong to distinctively different social classes. The Knight is a member of the aristocratic ruling class, and the narrators of the other three tales belong to middle class or the lower common people. This class distinction is represented in text through each pilgrim''s different interpretation of contemporary socio-political order. In other words, the Knight''s romance tries to embody the society''s dominant ideology that purports to maintain status quo. In contrast, the three fabliaux resist this ideological world picture―even though it is finally contained by the dominant social ideology. And this dialogic relation between the two classes accounts for socio-political problems of Chaucer''s contemporary world. The peasants'' rising of 1381 was the most dramatic expression of new order that pervaded social, political, and economic life of the post-plague England. This extensive and unprecedented peasantry uprising also reflects the keen class contradiction between aristocracy and peasantry. Nonetheless, Chaucer''s text mostly remains silent about this political upheaval of England. However, Chaucer''s text does not evade social reality; his works include clues and hints that lead our interpretation to Chaucer''s contemporary social problems. Narrative ruptures in The Knight''s Tale reveal that the ruling aristocratic ideology is no longer a reality but a fictive and wishful world picture of the nobility. Being posited in historical context, The Knight''s Tale betrays the internal contradiction of the aristocratic estate―the problems of retainers and mercenary knights who were nothing more than a plague to the peasantry estate. In different way, Chaucer''s fabliau, particularly, The Miller''s Tale, sounds the peasants'' resistance to the ruling class in its guised language and popular festive form. Moreover, in its interruption of the narrative, The Cook''s Tale presents us with some clues to the contradictions of late medieval city ruled by merchant patriciate in collusion with feudal lords. In this respect, Fragment I of Canterbury Tales contains narrative indications that represent limitations of the feudal aristocratic order. It also identifies struggle of the common people as the history''s 'prime mover' which strives to break down the old feudal regime. Each tale depicts a process in which the old feudal mode of production collapses by the common people''s collective praxis. Therefore, The Canterbury Tales, Fragment I, on one hand, is an ideological product that solidifies status quo; it is, on the other hand, a 'war of position' which suggests common people''s desire for freedom and utopian vision.
