C. elegans shows responses to acute ethanol exposure that are similar to those observed in human, mice, and Drosophila. We used C. elegans as a model system to characterize the genes affected by acute ethanol exposure. Interestingly, we identified a novel gene, T28C12.4, that was specifically responsive to ethanolstress. T28C12.4 encodes a novel protein with　limited homology to human neuroligin.　When treated with ethanolstress, the transgenic animal containing T28C12.4::GFP showed higher level of fluorescence in hypodermis. By serial deletion of predicted promoter and more distal region, I analyzed the upstream region of T28C12.4 to determine the regulatory elements responsible for general stress and heat shock. Also, we identified glr-2 that was the only glutamate receptor gene to be induced by ethanol. glr-2 mutant shows no difference in terms of ethanol resistance or sensitivity, compared with wild type. But they recovered more rapidly from ethanol-induced intoxication.
