Bach, a great composer of the Baroque Era, composed oratorio with his own unique musical format and composing techniques. Differing from Cantata, who composed a lot of songs, he composed only three pieces of oratorio for the main holidays of the year. Amon them, Christmas Oratorio has the largest scale, and it is Bach''s representative oratorio, which uses parody techniques. As studying Chrstams Oratorio, I realized the importance of lyrics in playing vocal musice, and decided to conduct research on symbolic meanings of lyrics in music. To explain it a little more detail, it is not exaggerating to say that all the expressions are based on the hedden meanings of lyrics. The story, structure, and compositon of each song need an appropriate arrangement according to the development of drama. Each independently, or individually; this is a theory of music format and symbolic expressions that are closely connected to lyrics.Christmas Oratorio is composed of six parts. Parts 1, 3, and 6 are usually written in D major to have identical character of music. Each part starts with D major with 38 beats in harmony, and ends with D major with 44 beats of choral. In addition, parts 1 and 2 are written in D and G majors, and parts 5 and 6 in A and D majors. From similar majors used and the same choral ending, we can see that Bach meticulously planned to compose each part so that each has some coherence.By using Baroque''s theory of music format, such as the melody of phrase, changes of harmony, emphasis and decoration of important lyrics, he tried to faithfully express the emotion of lyrics and his Christian belief. Even if he used parody from part 1 to part 6, but expressing lyrics musically, his Christmas Oratorio was used as church music by helping Lutheran congregation keep their faith strong. Even after 300 years have passed, this oratorio is loved by modern audience and remained as a great musical heritage. Even though melody and tone character are the most important things in expressing lyrics musically, Bach changed or leaped melodies step by step. He also used other expression techniques, including emphasis through repetitions of music format, changes of tone and tempo, and expression through organically connected parts. In addition, he maximized emotion and imagination that are presented in lyrics by expressing lyrics musically. Therefore, the importance of expressing lyrics musically can be found from madrigal, Italy''s wordly chorus music in the 16th century, to Bach.People who play and conduct Bach''s word, especially those who play church music, should have various abilities ┄ among them, they should be avle to understand Bach''s words and Baroque''s music theory. This research has investigated how Bach expanded his lyrics musically.
