The Steer-By- Wire (SBW) system replaces complex mechanical linkages of the current steering system with electric motors, sensors, and electronic control units. The SBW system thus has many advantages including weight reduction, variable gear ratio, variable steering feedback torque generation, and prevention of a driver from injury due to contact with a steering column during crash. However, the SBW system should guarantee its safety before commercialization, and therefore, a reliable and robust fault-tolerant technology has to be implemented. The objective of this research is to develop a fault-tolerant SBW control algorithm based on a SBW hardware-in-the-loop simulation. For fault simulation and control, the simulation system developed in 2003, has been modified to include individual electronic control units for a steering wheel and a road wheel part, and a supervisor for information exchange, using xPCTarget, Matlab/Simulink and CAN protocol. Performance of the simulation system has then been verified. Based on careful analysis on propagation effects of sensor faults, a reliable fault-tolerant control strategy has been developed. The fault-tolerant controller consists of a fault detection part that monitors and detects faults in the steering wheel and road wheel sensors, and a reconfiguration part that switches to normal sensor signal based on fault detection information. It has been demonstrated that the proposed algorithm detects sensor faults accurately and enables reliable steering control under various dynamic fault situations. For higher reliability and safety of the fault-tolerant control system, it will be necessary to share sensor information with other vehicle electronic control systems and to develop a fault-tolerant strategy for actuators and electronic control units.
