The independent type Steer-By-Wire (ISBW) system replaces complex mechanical linkages of the current steering system with electric motors, sensors, and electronic control units. The ISBW system has many advantages including weight reduction, variable gear ratio, variable steering feedback torque generation, and prevention of a driver from injury due to contact with a steering column during crash. However, the ISBW system should guarantee its safety before commercialization, and therefore, a reliable and robust fault-tolerant technology has to be developed. The objective of this research is to develop a fault-tolerant ISBW control algorithm that operates independent wheel control according to driving status and increase the reliability of ISBW system through redundancy. Based on careful analysis on propagation effects of sensor faults, a reliable fault-tolerant control strategy has been developed. The fault-tolerant controller consists of a fault detection part that monitors and detects faults in the steering wheel and road wheel sensors, and a reconfiguration part that switches to normal sensor signal based on fault detection information. It has been demonstrated that the proposed algorithm detects sensor faults accurately and enables reliable steering control under various dynamic fault situations. Also, the improvement of the total system reliability is demonstrated by estimating the reliability of the Fail-Safe algorithm. For higher reliability and safety of the fault-tolerant control system, it will be necessary to share sensor information with other vehicle electronic control systems and to develop a fault-tolerant strategy for actuators and electronic control units.
