Recently as conservator and metal engineers began cooperation in analytic research on micro-structure of metal artifacts, systematic analysis is being carried out on the functions of the parts of iron artifacts. In addition, the analysis of micro-structure of excavated iron artifacts by site and age makes it possible to estimate the development process of iron tool manufacturing technologies in ancient times. This study purposed to examine the manufacturing method of iron artifacts excavated from ancient tombs in the Uiseong area and, based on the findings, to clarify the system of iron manufacturing technologies in the 5th~6th century. Artifacts selected for this research were 6 items including an iron hatchet from the 3rd tomb at Daeri-ri and another 6 items including an iron arrowhead from the 3rd tomb at Hakmi-ri, which were all forged. Under the principle of protecting their original form to the maximum, this study collected samples from the selected iron artifacts. Collected samples were mounted with epoxy resin and their surface was polished microscopically. In order to observe micro-structure, the surface was etched with 3% Nital solution and, by doing so, pre-processing was completed. Micro-structure was observed with a metallurgical microscope, and the hardness of micro-structure was measured using a Vikers hardness tester. Non-metallic inclusions found in micro-structure were analyzed with SEM-EDS to find their elements. According to this analysis, the iron artifacts excavated in the Uiseong area were manufactured by two methods. Firstly, bloom was manufactured using the solid low-temperature reduction method and struck to be shaped. After shaping, they were partially applied with carburizing and decarburizing in order to heighten the content of carbon. Secondly, bloom was converted into steel using an unknown method, and struck to be shaped. In the latter case, there were partial decarburization, as shaping some artifacts. The features of the artifact manufacturing methods, revealed by this research, in the Uiseong area from the early 5C to the end of the 6C are that, from the aspect of materials, both bloom with low carbon content and steel manufactured by an unknown method were used, and that they were partially applied with carburizing and decarburizing in order to heighten the content of carbon. In addition, it was found that heat treatment was applied only to parts which require high strength and tenacity.
