This investigation focused on producing hydrogen from various carbohydrates by applying the anaerobic bacteria and based on this application, the possible effects on the hydrogen production and the intermediate products were studied under the presence of the heavy metal. The anaerobic bacteria mentioned in this experiment were prepared from the activated sludge plant. There were relative 1% amount of the glucose, sucrose and cellulose as the possible carbon source to 1.5L of medium, and it was purged with the nitrogen gas to maintain the anaerobic status. However, there were no control over the pH and temperature. The hydrogen produced relative to the changes in carbon source displayed following result of 0.89mol H_(2)/mol substrate for the glucose, 3.26mol H_(2)/mol substrate for the sucrose and Omol H_(2)/mol substrate for the cellulose, thus implying that there was no hydrogen produced from cellulose. And the acetic acid and the butyric acid were the organic acids, which were generated due to the decomposition of carbon sources. In order to understand the effect which the heavy metal contribute to the hydrogen production, the sucrose was selected as the carbon source since it had most hydrogen production. The cadmium and copper were selected as the heavy metals for testing. The cadmium was placed into the medium with different concentrations of 20, 40, and 60 ppm and the copper was 1 and 5 ppm. Under the presence of the cadmium, the hydrogen production was decreasing as the concentration of cadmium increased however, the increasing pattern of the organic acid such as the acetic acid was detected. Moreover, the copper exhibited the similar result as the cadmium. 747㎖/ℓ-medium was observed under the IPA copper presence, which was similar to that of cadmium 20 ppm. On the other hand, the fact that there was no hydrogen production occurred under the presence of copper 5ppm indicated the copper had heavier reaction hindrance compared to the cadmium. Furthermore, the fact that the hydrogen production were deducing while the acetic acid increased suggested that the hydrogen producing bacteria which was sensitive to the environmental changes thus had the growth hindrance, and the acid producing bacteria was selected as the dominant species instead, therefore increased the concentration of the acetic acid as a result.
