This study tries to obtain and analyse composite meanings of family 'kajok') perceived by the general public in present Korean society. It takes for a theoretical methodology the perspective of social constructionism to address interactional discourses between the investigator and those investigated, thereby increasing its reliability. Ethno-lexicographic method through in-depth interviews is used to elicit verbal expressions related to the concept of family. Forty-one married men and women aged between 20's and 70's are interviewed. All of them are from the Seoul Metropolitan area and most of them have a high educational background. Main problems of study are as follow: 1) What are the content of the concept of 'kajok'? (1) What are the first feelings toward 'kajok'? (2) What is the personal meaning of 'kajok'? (3) What are the negative aspects of 'kajok'? (4) Make a short phrase with 'kajok' (5) What are synonyms of 'kajok' and the differences between them and 'kajok'? 2) What are the range of the family? (1) What are the differences between the concept of the family and that of kinship? (2) Who are included among family members? (3) What are the differences between the traditional family and the modem one? 3) What are the viewpoints toward various types of family in the present society? Main results of the study are as follow: First, there are differences in the perception of the concept of family in terms of sex and age. Male respondents are found to project more feelings of economic responsibility and obligation toward the family. Female respondents are found to seek affective and psychological security from the family. This study clearly shows that men adopt the idea that a man not a woman is a breadwinner and the one who is expected to protect family members at all cost. This result can be interpreted as that the traditional patriarchical attitude is still maintained in the present Korean society. When it comes to age differences, it is found that whereas older respondents perceive the family as supportive and reliable, younger respondents does as comfortable and warm. This result is related to the effect of life cycle: one tends to feel fulfilled, thus finding family members, mostly his/her children, to be able to be dependent on, as one gets older. Secondly, the range of persons included among family members is very contracted. All of the respondents consider immediate family members such as parents, children and unmarried siblings as family. But it is rather rare for other close relatives such as nieces and cousins to be included. It is interesting, however, to find that some of the male and young respondents consider paternal grandparents as family but not maternal ones. It is also interesting to find a young female respondent to say that a niece or nephew from the husband's side can be considered as family but not from the wife's side. This shows again that the patrilineal idea is still operating even among the younger generation with high educational backgrounds. Lastly, attitudes toward various types of family are found to be different, depending upon one's sex and age. The degree of acceptance of so-called deviant forms of family such as one-parent family, adoption, cohabitation and homosexuality is higher among female respondents than male ones. The same trend is found among younger respondents than older ones. In the same vein, male respondents more than female ones show a higher degree of acceptance of traditional familism and the ideology of normal family. These results also show that men are more conservative than women in the present Korean society. This study introduce many lexicons connoting composite meanings of the family. These lexicons are collected through the discourse with the respondents. They are quite different from definitions loaded in a dictionary. They are not necessarily the same with those concepts defined and used in academic studies. In general, the results of this study show that expressive functions of the family are more sought than instrumental ones among the respondents. But the most important finding in this study is that the concept of family is perceived differently, depending upon sex and age. It can be suggested that synonyms of the family such as 'shikku' or 'kajeong' that are in fact more familiar to the general public be used along with the concept of 'kajok' when conducing the family research in Korea.
