(Clarinet Trio Op.114, in a ...

This thesis is a study on the accompaniment of 「Sonata for Violin and Piano No.3, Op. 108 in d minor」 by Johannes Brahms(1833-1897). Even though the Romanticism was a predominant phase in the 19th century, Brahms was a notable composer who basically conservative, logical and studious and he had a great taste for taut forms in his music which was inherited from Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Moreover, he used genre distinctions loosely which was influenced by Robert Schumann (1810-1856). He composed all kinds of music including symphony, concerto, chamber music and lied, etc. But especially, his chamber music takes a big place because of new formations. The String quartets were the mainstream up to the period of classicism. However, Brahms tried new formations such as 「Clarinet Trio Op. 114 in a minor」 and 「Horn Trio Op.40 in E^(b) Major」, etc. Of his chamber music, three violin sonatas could be finally published after at the age of 40 because of his self-critical personality. 「No.3, Op.108 in d minor」 which is studied in this thesis, is the last violin sonata he composed. He started to compose it at the age of 53 and finished at 55 in Switzerland. Brahms employed four-movement scheme. It reflects profundity and seriousness of his late period. Also, it suggests his internal pain that came from continuous death of acquaintances. Key relationships between each movement are d minor - D Major - f^(#) minor - d minor. Brahms exploited an unprecedented key progression as Beethoven did. He attempted to move unconventionally to the parallel key and the mediant key of the first movement in the second and third movements instead of transferring to the relative key relations. In light this, not only did he adhere to classical tradition, but also he made great effort to construct his singular aesthetic asbeing tinged with lyrical melodies and romantic harmony. As I progress this research, I tried to approach how to express the music as a pianist rather than composition techniques. Also I concentrated upon the process of how violin and piano harmonize their individualities together.
