Laser beam sapphire wafer scribing was carried out for various scribing parameters using picosecond pulse laser with multi-wavelength; 355 nm, 532 nm, 1064 nmIt is hard to avoid contamination and heat induced change of sapphire wafer when the pulse duration of laser beam is longer than nanosecond. To overcome this problem, the new type of pulse laser whose pulse duration is shorter than nanosecond is introduced. The reaction time between a picosecond pulse laser and a material is so short that there are no heat transfer and no leftover around the laser beam irradiated point for the material, and also no burr and no island are formed. In this experiment, a picosecond pulse laser was used to apply these advantages which could not be obtained when using nanosecond pulse laser.Sapphire has good thermal, mechanical and chemical characteristics, so it is widely used for electrical and optical parts. Despite these extra-ordinary characteristics, the process of sapphire wafer was difficult for the conventional way using diamond wheel or diamond tip. Thus a sapphire wafer was used to scribe by a picosecond pulse laser. There are many variables when a pulse laser is used for micro processing. Most important factors are laser beam average power, laser beam scanning speed, laser beam irradiation time, laser beam spot size, laser beam wave length and assist gas. In this study 3 wavelengths were used for scribing 355 nm (UV), 532 nm (green), and 1064 nm (IR). Optimum condition was obtained to find best scribing parameters for picosecond pulse laser and the change of composition of sapphire after picosecond pulse laser beam irradiation. In this experiment, important variables were laser beam average power, laser beam scanning speed and cycle to find the best parameters. The best condition was obtained with a moving speed 13~15 mmsec, 3~5 cycle of X-Y stage for every wavelength.Compressed air was used for assist gas for better scribing to compare with no assist gas. It was found that there was less sapphire particle left in the V shaped point of pulse laser irradiation. With the change of wavelengths, it was found that the AR(aspect ratio) of UV 355 nm showed the best result due to multi-photon absorption. With the decrease of wave length of laser beam, it was possible to get small spot size with the same energy irradiation for the small spot size.
