In this study, TiO_(2) thin films were prepared by a sol-gel process and their structural and optical properties with calcination temperature and concentration of catalyst are examined. The TiO_(2) solution was prepared by using titanium alkoxide as a starting material, doubly distilled and deionized water as a solvent, nitric acid (HNO3) as a catalyst. TiO_(2) thin films were deposited on substrate by sol-gel dip coating at a withdrawal speed of 100 mm/min. For the crystallization of the films, drying was repeated at 115 ℃ for 15 min in oven. The TiO_(2) films were calcined in the temperature range of 150 ℃ with increasing temperature rate of 5 ℃/min for 30 min in furnace. Thin film XRD was used for anatase crystal phase identification. The morphology were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The normal incident transmittance of the films was measured by a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The TiO_(2) paticles are obtained from coating sols by evaporating solvents. The XRD result of the TiO_(2) particles from both commercial sols and low temperature sols are identified as nanocrystalline anatase. SEM micrographs of the low temperature films are composed of spherical particles of about 20 nm in size. On the other hand commercial films consist of non-homogenous particles whose size varies from 20 to 60 nm. Thus, the low temperature films are more uniform in particle size and less agglomerated. A small particle size provides a greater specific surface area that is crucial in obtaining higher photocatalytic efficiency. The films have high transparency in the visible range and the binding energy of films agrees well with the value reported in the literature. The photocatalytic activity result of ethanol is completely decomposed after UV illumination for 20 min in the case of the low temperature films whereas 50% of ethanol is decomposed after 20 min for the commercial films. The small particle size makes the diffusion of the photoexcited electron-hole pairs fast to the surface than the large partlce and results in recombination probability falling. These results shows low temperature films higher photocatalytic efficiency.
