This study is to inquire into the origination of background, ideals, literature and works of art in the Romantic era and to examine the aesthetic characteristics being applied to fashion for the definite understanding of the style of romanticism in fashion. The method of study was at first to analyze an external form of romantic art works through bibliographies on philosophy, literature, architecture and art. In fashion, 19th century romanticism fashion is based on the history books. Post-modern fashion after the 1990s is on the 「Gap Collection」 which gathered various works from the five best fashion shows in the world. It is thought to be very valuable to study aesthetic characteristics of romantic style in two parts; internal meaning and external form. This is because it provides a great deal of understanding in modern fashion and at the same time gives technique, design and information in conjunction with re-creating romantic fashion. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to define what romantic fashion style is and understand exactly how this 19th century fashion applies to modern fashion. Romanticism made from the social atmosphere that wishes to escape in tradition and authority made up by the Revolution and Enlightenment, and the resistance about the social problem that the Industrial Revolution causes. Therefore, romanticism respected individuality, freedom, and emotion, and adored the past and the far world. These internal meanings were eventually turned into the following four external forms after combining them with developed techniques and materials. The characteristics of romanticism in art works are as follows: 1) Sensuality to sexually express the woman's body line. 2) Ornamentation to use as many ornaments as possible in order to effect the gorgeous and visionary atmosphere. 3) Exoticism to express a human longing for the Orient by means of losing sight of reality in a mysterious atmosphere. 4) Mingler to mix up or mingle with many newly-developed materials. The aesthetic characteristics of romanticisms in fashion are as follows: 1) Sensuality to emphasize the beauty of a woman's curves is expressed in the exaggeration and exposure of sexual body parts. This is to express ones body more affirmatively but does not include the fetish factor. 2) Ornamentation to exert a gorgeous and romantic atmosphere is expressed in splendid color, materials, detail, trimming and accessories. 3) Exoticism to show a mysterious and unique mood is expressed in exotic materials, patterns, items and accessories. 4) Mingler is expressed in the contrast and fusion of rich colors and materials. The sensuality of the 19C was expressed by the exaggeration and exposure to draw a curved X silhouette. The modern sensuality represents various ways of not only the silhouette on past romantic fashion but also making the human body mysterious through see-through material including romantic patterns and ornaments along with the emphasis of the human body line through thin drape-like materials. These were found with the development of materials and changes in value. Ornamentation is still strongly expressed in all past and modern fashion. Especially in modern fashion, it creates the gorgeous and romantic look by skills brought from the past along with newly developed techniques and materials. In contrast to the 19th Century, new materials were developed; materials with gorgeous and mysterious patterns made from new skills, various laces, and materials with beads and spangles. Exoticism of the 19C was expressed by wearing exotic items and accessories imported from India, Egypt and Persia or by using exotic materials and patterns. In the modern world, because of accelerated internationalization, more and various exotic patterns, colors, accessories and details have been widely used. Mingler was expressed by making various mixtures within one costume through new technology and materials from the mechanicalization of dyeing and the textile industry along with the effect of Romanticism. In modern fashion, it is expressed in using material that may not join with romanticism drastically and mixing contrastive and heterogeneous patterns and materials being assisted by the scientific development and trend of respecting diversity. Sensuality, ornamentation, exoticism and mingler had formed romanticism including internal meanings. Each one of these characteristics is not expressed individually, but mixed together to form the style of Romanticism in fashion. Romanticism is being solidified in the post modernism dominated society of today through the emphasis of emotion and passion like Dionysos. Post-modernism has broken the wall between life and culture and emphasizes individuality and diversity. This began with the rejection of rationalism and formalism which made up modernism. Through this romantic and physical feelings are being treated more importantly. Therefore romanticism can be seen through the increase in diversity and the possibility of new point of views in fashion. Also the addition of different periods and their culture's image in romanticism reveals the need for inner peace.
