Aiming to examine a modeling change in Chinese costume according to the inflow of Western culture in the first half of the 20th century, this study first looked into the characteristics of the transformative process, which were shown in Chinese female costume for the first half of the 20th century, by period, by style, and by modeling element of costume, with the background of a theory with respect to the Chinese history related to the influx of Western culture, the Chinese world view about Western Europe, and the attitude toward accepting the Western culture. In terms of the Chinese female costume for the first half of the 20th century, first, as the costume that a Western change was shown in traditional clothes while accepting the Western culture passively due to the imperialistic invasion of the Western Powers, it intactly indicated the transitional characteristics passing into modernization or westernization from traditional society of China. Namely, as China in the first half of the 20th century is in a period that the ruling system, which had been formed for thousands of years, is changed, it came to show the phenomenon dubbed the anti-tradition or the critical succession in light of costume culture, and this can be said that the development of female modeling due to the inflow and the learning of Western culture, was constituted in the continuous process of westernization. Second, the first half of the 20th century is a period that the frame of Chinese-costume shape was completed, and the Jungcheseoyong (Chinese Substance and Western Function) thought, which uses a Western thing with making it a principle for the Chinese thought centering on China and for a Chinese thing, other than unconditionally wearing Western costume, had influence even on clothes, thus it can be analyzed that the Chinese modern-style costume was worn by accepting and transforming the Western costume based on the traditionally costume culture of China. This can be said that a thought of Chinese people was intactly applied even to costume, thereby having attained the modern-style costume development peculiar to China. That is to say, it can be said to be seen a continuous effort to maintain traditionality in a sense that just used a Western thing with own pride of Chinese costume, by wearing after compromising with, uniting or improving the modeling elements of Western costume, on the basis of the originally traditional costume of China. Third, in terms of Chinese costume shown in the first half of the 20th century, the 1930s is a period that showed a perfect compromise while being applied to the Chinese costume with being introduced a three-dimensional cutting method of the West even to the constitution as well as to the appearance, in the process of developing into westernization or modernization. Also, in terms of Chinese society at that time when was transformed into international society, a wave of westernization was positioned in the whole culture such as living and a thought and simultaneously even in terms of costume, Western elements were shown most, thus it was a period that costume culture was most colorful. The costume in the 1930s was shown to be functional, convenient, simple, democratic and diversified on the whole, and escaping from excessive decoration including the liberation from concealment and restriction in the past, it pursued modernism and simplification that can be said to the representative characteristics of Western costume in the 20th century. That is, the Chinese costume in the 1930s can be seen to be an important period that arranged for the developmental key point aiming at westernization or modernization.
