The purpose of this study is to explore the life and activities of Billy Graham as the leader of Christian revival movement in the 20th Century, and to consider how his ministry influenced the development of the churches of North America and the world. The significance of this thesis is as follows: First, Billy Graham's revival ministry is closely related to the revival movement of the Korean church, which led the drastic growth of Korean Christianity in the 1970sand 1980s. It was Billy Graham who was the first foreign evangelist that preached before the massive audiences as a keynote speaker. Second, the revival ministry of Billy Graham is closely related to the development of evangelical movement in the 20th century. This study examines concretely contributions made by his ministry to the revival of world Christianity. The Chapter two deals with his early life. This chapter also examines the process of his conversion, his call to the ministry, and his call to the revivalist, in the position of historical theology. The Chapter three investigates the development and characteristics of Billy Graham's revival movement by dividing into the first period and the second period. The Chapter four discusses how the revival movement of Billy Graham influenced the growth of U. S. church and world church, and the overall political and social fields. The thesis concludes with brief outline of the research, evaluation upon his revival movement, and further suggestions. The first period of his revival movement was during the years of 1949 thru 1954. The characteristics of the first period were emphasis upon prayers, the Scriptures, and God's sovereignty over human world. The second period of his revival movement envisioned with the missionary zeal and ideas. In this period, he preached to the miraculous 210 millions persons in 185 countries through diverse groups including Mission World and Global Mission. The weapon, which he possessed, was the sword of the Word. The evangelical achievement of the second period was the Lausanne Conference, in August, 1978, where, under the leadership of Rev. Billy Graham, the 2,400 revivalists of 150 countries discussed the conservative, absolute evangelicalism and the Christian mission. About twenty six ministers assisted his ministry. Billy Graham was talented to organize team ministry. Since the Los Angeles congregation in 1949, Billy Graham has been the leader of global evangelical movement. He renewed the American churches with the vivid biblical lessons and evangelical zeal, where the Protestant reform faith was largely shaken by modernism. However, there were considerable criticisms upon his activities. Critics argued that Billy Graham had a pluralistic perspective that tried to associate himself with Catholicism in order to maintain his authority. Also, D. G. Hart criticized that, unlike the past, modern churches was not static, and did not emphasized the tradition, and the individualistic characteristics were prevalent, because the revival movement of Billy Graham fostered such modern churches. However, Billy Graham's 50-year Evangelical ministry contained more positive elements. It is passionate that he is preparing his last-likely congregation, which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York in June 2005. With this thesis, the author hopes genuine revival movement once again in the stagnant Korean churches.
