This study was investigated sample digestion techniques and reliability of analytical results for quantitative determination of PM_(25) metallic elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) and closed vessel microwave acid digestion method. Quality control for standard reference solution was carried out maintaining the accuracy of analytical method by ICP-MS. Method detection limit(MDL) ranged from 0.001 ㎍/L to 0.164 ㎍/L and the experimental results of precision and accuracy are lower less than 100 amu for the elements such as Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca and Zn. Quality control of the overall analytical procedures for metallic element determinations of PM_(25) was estimated by analysis of a urban particulate matter(SRM 1648) standard reference material. Three different digestion solutions(HNO_(3), HNO_(3) + H_(2)O_(2) (4:1) mixtrue and 5.55% HNO_(3) + 16.75% HCl mixture) were applied to SRM 1648 and PM_(25) samples individually. The precision of the analytical methods was determined by replicate determination of SRM 1648 with three different digestion solutions. The results showed that the CV(coefficient of variation) of all elements were greater than 20% except for Tl in HNO_(3), Na, Al, Ag and Tl in HNO_(3) + H_(2)O_(2) (4:1), Na, Mg, Cr and Ag in 5.55% HNO_(3) + 16.75% HCl. In a comparison of values determined by ICP-MS and NIST certified and/or non-certified values, elements with the value of 70∼120% were Mg, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in three different digestion solutions. The recovery of Cr content was less than 40% and in the case of Na, Al and K were less than 70% in three digestion solutions. In the case of As and Se were excess 120% in 5.55% HNO_(3) + 16.75% HCl mixture. A 5.55% HNO_(3) + 16.75% HCl mixed acid digestion was resonable digestion method for the elements such as Co, Sb, Th and U. As a result, three digestion solutions used in this study are completely unable to digest Cr of PM_(25). Reliability of Cr, As, and Se showed problems in digestion with a 5.55% HNO_(3) + 16.75% HCl mixture due to the influence of chlorides. HNO_(3) and HNO_(3) + H_(2)O_(2) (4:1) mixture is sufficient to fulfil the digestion of As as well as Se in PM_(25). ICP-MS showed improvement in accurate and precise determination of some trace elements like Cd, V and Pb in PM_(25). It is important to use digestion solution for each element to qualify analytical precision.
