Based on the perception that education on the environment in elementary school is education on life for the next generation, it is important to let children learn environment protection by practice. Thus, this research aims to survey and analyze 6th students' interest in the environment, the need for environment education, schools' environment preservation condition and students' awareness of environment preservation condition and of ways to preserve the environment and to help teachers teach the environment more effectively. Students' interest in the environment was 2.38 on average, somewhat low awareness level of the environment. Their awareness of environment protection and preservation condition was an average of 2.20, which shows they are worried about environment protection. Their awareness of ways to preserve the environment was an average of 3.34. The high figure indicates they think positively about it. Also, they had a relatively high awareness level of 2.96 on average of the need for environment education. On a question of what they value most in the natural environment, the living environment (25.2%) topped the list, followed by the forest environment (23.4%) and the air environment (20.7%). As for the most seriously polluted natural environment, the elementary school students pointed to the air environment (37.9%) as No.1, followed by the water environment (21.7%) and the living environment (14.4%). Regarding causes of environment pollution, they pointed their fingers at vehicle emissions (50.0%) and factory smokes (36.0%) in the air environment; landfill of residential wastes (54.2%), massive uses of agrochemicals and fertilizers (12.7%), and disposal and landfill of large quantities of industrial wastes (12.1%) in the land environment; reckless disposal of sewage (37.0%) and disposal and landfill of large quantities of industrial wastes (28.3%) in the water environment; forest fires (40.1%) and reckless logging (24.1%) in the forest environment; disposal of large quantities of food wastes (42.9%) and massive use of disposable goods and plastic (35.6%) in the living environment. The students were concerned about tragic consequences of environment degradation, more specifically, the depletion of the ozone layer (38.0%) and respiratory and circulatory diseases (34.2%) in air pollution; hampered growth and drops in crop harvest (29.0%) and pollution of farm products and the safety (27.8%) in land pollution; disruption of marine life's ecosystem (51.4%) and reduction in wet lands (23.3%) in marine pollution; water-borne diseases (40.2%) and reduction in fish species & appearance of deformed fishes (23.8%) in water pollution; degradation of the beautiful natural environment (34.6%) and destruction of the ecosystem (29.2%) in forest pollution; pests (36.8%) and water pollution (28.1%) in living environment pollution. The students was first given environment education when they were between first and second grades (32.0%) or fourth grade (23.9%). It was, in large part, about the importance of environment protection (63.5%) and the environment (21.9%). They learned about the environment through classes (32.9%) or TV (29.7%) (p<.01). They studied it during classes (43.9%) or field trips (38.2%) (p<.05). Their study tools were textbooks and books (55.9%). Students wanted to learn it by doing various activities (66.5%) (p<.001). High grades went to schools' environment preservation condition (51.2%), separate collection of wastes (63.8%) and use of recycled goods (49.8%). The most trash they throw away were vinyl (44.7%) and paper (36.5%). All of which shows that while the students recognize the importance of environment education, schools offer one-size-fits-all environment education, undermining students' interest in it. Therefore, schools have to expand field trips, events and tours to reflect students' preference, thereby encouraging them to practice environment protection. Also, more opportunities for training courses and first-hand looks at environment education should be given to teachers.
