This study was conducted 1) to investigate the removal abilities of plants according to plant species, environmental changes (light intensity and temperature), gas treatments (single or mixed gas), media types, and microorganisms when plants were exposed to benzene, toluene, m-xylene, and o-xylene (these were called as BTX hereafter) among volatile organic compounds of indoor spaces; 2) to determine the physiological responses of indoor plants according to the fan operation of an indoor air purification system using plant-media-microorganism and the assessment of human risks from discharged microorganisms; 3) to finally prove the removal efficiency of indoor pollutants of the indoor air purification system using plants-media-microorganisms when applied to indoor space. When Hedera helix, Spathiphyllum spp., Ficus benjamina, Pachira aquatica, Dracaena deremensis cv. Warneckii Compacta, Syngonium podophyllum, Dieffenbachia amoena, and Ficus elastica were treated with a mixture of BTX (benzene:toluene:m-xylene:o-xylene = 0.5 ppm : 3 ppm : 0.25 ppm : 0.25 ppm), Syngonium podophyllum and Hedra helix showed higher elimination effect than other plants in the removal of benzene or toluene. While Syngonium podophyllum showed higher elimination effect during the day than during the night, Hedera helix showed the effect in the opposite way. Also, there was no difference in the removal of xylene between day and night, except the m-xylene removal by Ficus elastica. For the effect of indoor temperature and light intensity on the Syngonium podophyllum plant's removal of mixed BTX, the elimination effect was greater under the 24℃ condition than the 18℃ condition, and the removal rate was higher under the high light intensity than under the low light intensity, when the temperature was low.In the BTX elimination effects and the following physiological changes of plants when a single gas or gas mixture of benzene and toluene was exposed in an air-tight chamber, the gas removal rate of the plants varied depending on whether it was day or night, as well as on the plant species and whether the gas was a single gas or a gas mixture. During the day, Spathiphyllum spp., Syngonium podophyllum, Hedera helix registered the highest removal efficiency for a single gas (benzene or toluene) whereas Cissus rombifolia had the lowest removal efficiency. When benzene and toluene were treated at the same time, however, Spathiphyllum spp. and Syngonium podophyllum showed lower efficiency than Cissus rombifolia and Hedera helix. Meanwhile, when the plants were exposed to either benzene or toluene or their mixture for six hours, all the physiological activities such as photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, and the transpiration rate were significantly reduced. The results of the removal of mixed BTX by the total bacterial populations isolated from the cultivation media of different plants showed that different levels of removal efficiency were registered according to the total bacterial population by plant species and the gas types. The results further showed that the total bacterial populations from the cultivation media of Dieffenbachia spp., Ficus elastica, and Pachira aquatica were more efficient than those of the other plant species in the removal of mixed BTX. Meanwhile, the microbial population, which was isolated from the Pachira aquatica medium that was effective in the removal of mixed BTX, was innoculated in the control group with the hydroball medium itself without plant and the hydroball medium with plant. Then, the effects of the BTX removal were examined before and after the innoculation. The effect on the removal of BTX compound by medium with plant was 2 to 3 times as high as that of the control group before the innoculation of the microbial population. The plant's ability to remove the BTX compound was more efficient when the microbial population was innoculated into the medium with plant. Among such plants, Syngonium podophyllum demonstrated the most significant removal effect when compared to other plants. In this case, the number of biomass organisms was significantly increased after the innoculation of the microbial population when compared to that before the innoculation. The removal rate of the mixed BTX of the air purification system using plant-media-microorganism according to plant species and media showed that the removal efficiency of BTX with an idle system without operation was the highest in the Luwasa hydroball (LC) medium that contained 60% (v/v) active carbon, regardless of the plant species, and the removal efficiency of BTX by air purification systems using plants-media-microorganisms displayed the same result. While removal abilities of BTX according to plants species varied with the gas types in the active system, BTX was completely removed 20 or 60 minutes after the treatment. Especially in the case of Sansevieria trifasciata, the gas was thoroughly eliminated within 20 minutes after the gas treatment. Consequently, it was found that the selection of both the medium and the plant species was very important in removing the volatile organic compound in a room, and that when a medium was used as an air purifying filter, the removal efficiency could be tremendously enhanced by the medium additive to the plant itself. In addition, harmful bacteria to human were not detected in the discharged air that passed through the air purification system regardless of the type of medium. When a fan in the air purification system using plants-media was set to be active or inactive at intervals of 30 minutes, one hour, and two hours, the physiological changes of differently-shaped Ficus elastica and Syngonium podophyllum showed that the stem flux rate, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate in both plants were increased during the day and decreased during the night, whereas their boundary layer resistance showed the opposite changes. Compared to the physiological factors when the system fan was inactive, however, the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in both plants were gradually reduced in time when the system fan was activated at the interval of 30 minutes. On the contrary, neither plant demonstrated significant impacts in their physiological activities when the fan was activated at the interval of one hour or two hours. The final experiment was carried out to investigate the removal efficiency of indoor pollutants of an indoor air purification system using plants-media-microorganisms when the system was applied to actual indoor spaces. In the empty room (E), the room with paints containing 5% thinner on the B5-sized hardboard (Ep), the room with plants equivalent to 2% of the room size (two Ficus benjamina and four Syngonium podophyllum) under the Ep condition (Pp), the room with the Pp system under the Ep condition (Sp) and the room with the commercial air purifier under the Ep condition (Ap), the levels of indoor TVOCs, toluene, m-xylene, formaldehyde, PM10, and the particle concentrations of 0.5-μm particles and 1.0-μm particles were determined. According to the results of measuring the levels of TVOCs, formaldehyde, toluene and m-xylene, these were gradually increased in time from the initial values in the experimental group with the paints. In the experimental group with the plants, these factors were initially increased but decreased after four hours. The system and the air purifier effectively removed the formaldehyde, TVOCs, toluene, and m-xylene, and particularly the system removed toluene and m-xylene within two hours. The elimination of PM10 and the 0.5-μm fine particles was the most effective in the group with 2% plants. For the removal of 1.0-μm particles, the air purifier showed higher removal efficiency than other experimental groups but the dust particles were rather increased after three hours. Therefore, the air purification system using the plants-media-microorganisms system demonstrated a remarkable efficiency on the removal or reduction of contaminants in the room such as formaldehyde, TVOCs, benzene, and toluene. In particular, the air purification system using plant-medium-microorganism is considered to have the similar effect to those of other existing air purification systems in terms of the efficiency in removing contaminants

In particular, the air purification system using plant-medium-microorganism is considered to have the similar effect to those of other existing air purification systems in terms of the efficiency in removing contaminants
