Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors influencing on the development of stereopsis in refractive accommodative esotropia. Methods: The patients of refractive accommodative esotropia, whose deviation angles were not decompensated but could be controled by cycloplegic refraction during the follow-up periods longer than 3 years, were classified into two groups on the basis of stereopsis condition checked at the final visit: Group 1 of 24 patients with stereopis better then 100 sec and group 2 of 24 patients with stereopsis worse than 100 sec. Evaluating factors, including mean onset age of strabismus, mean age at first prescription of glasses, mean period from onset of strabismus to the prescription of glasses, change of refraction, and the presence of amblyopia at the first visit, were compared between two groups. Results: Mean follow up periods were 7.45 years in group 1 and 6.17 years in group 2. In group 1 and 2, mean onset age of strabismus were 2.13 and 3.02 years, mean age at the first prescription of glasses were 2.35 and 3.02 years, mean period from the onset of strabismus to the prescription of glasses were 0.22 and 0.81 years (p=0.042), change of refraction were -0.44 and -0.48 diopter/year, numbers of patients with amblyopia at the first visit to clinic were 9 and 15, respectively. All factors but mean period from onset of strabismus to the prescription of glasses did not show statistically significant difference between two groups. Conclusions: In refractive accommodative esotropia, early prescription of glasses is important for the better development of stereopsis.
