In the thesis ,Klavierstucke Op.118 of Johannes Brahms is analyzed and researched. Klavierstucke Op.118, one of a number of Brahms' works, is a character piece as one of the crucial forms in the age of romanticism. Unlike short pieces of other comtemporary composers', it describes an emotional aspect of the work subjectively as well as conceptually without a title in a program form. Prior to analyzing it, we study briefly about the historical background in the 19th century when Brahms worked, the romantic and neo-classic music and some works of Brahms'. Afterwards <KlavierstuckeOp.118> is investigated based on forms, harmony, melody and rhythm.. With respect to the structural aspect of this piece it consists of four intermezzos, one ballade and one romanze. Especially the intermezzo included in this piece is not a passing bagatelle but an independent instrumental piece. All intermezzos presented in the piece adopt the ternary form except the intermezzo of No. 1 that has a simple binary form. From the harmonic point of view, the piece is characterized by a dense harmony, a broken chord through a broad range and the harmony consisting of the third and sixth tone. In terms of the melody it is quite simple and humble but represented with a deep internal emotion lyrically. The subject melody appears in the inner part occasionally, and is duplicated with the third, the sixth and the octave. And it has two melodies proceeded at the same time. Moreover several grounds involved in its melody are combined into one phrase. Besides, a broken chord spreaded in a broad range and the contrapuntal techniques are the major property of this music. In the relevance of the rhythm in the work, various manipulations of the rhythmical transformation such as retrograde, 2:3 cross rhythm, syncopation, hemiola, etc. are very prominent. As seen from the analysis and synthesis of <Klavierstucke Op.118> in the thesis, we can consider that a romantic emotion can be incorporated well with the classical form.
