This research was conducted in order to examine how the soleus H-reflex was modulated as the amount of weight bearing on both feet changed in static standing. Twenty-two subjects (10 males and 12 females, aged 20-33 years) without previous history of neurological or orthopedic disease were recruited for this study. The amount of load on the subjects’ feet was varied while standing upright using a custom-made suspension system connected with a harness and an overhead pulley. The amplitude of soleus H-reflex was measured in six different weight bearing conditions; 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50%. Soleus H-reflexes were evoked by electrical stimulation to tibial nerve in popliteal fossa of the dominant leg. The soleus H-reflex was recorded using a surface electromyography (EMG) electrode on the muscle. H/Mmax ratio was used as an expression of the amplitude of the soleus H-reflex. To compare the H/Mmax ratios among six different body weight bearing conditions, one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used (p<0.05). The amplitudes of the soleus H-reflex decreased significantly as the amount of weight bearing on the feet decreased. The H-reflex in the 100% body weight bearing condition was significantly different from the 70%, 60%, and 50% weight bearing conditions. The 90% body weight bearing condition was also significantly different from the 70%, 60%, and 50% conditions. However, the 80% body weight bearing condition was not significantly different from any other conditions. The mechanism of the modulation in the soleus H-reflex according to the amount of body weight support is due to the changes of presynaptic inhibition to the soleus motor neuron pool by the proprioceptive feedback input from the loaded legs. This result can be applied to the clinical trials of partial body weight supported gait training to the central nerve injured patients.$$a$$a
